2012 BMW 3-Series F30 Caught Winter Testing on Video

Winter has come to the northern hemisphere, which means high-speed Nurburgring testing is now almost nil. Cold testing however, is only just beginning. BMW is among those on the programme as this spied next-generation 3 Series (codenamed F30) proves. Finer details pertaining to parts like headlights, styling lines and so on are not very clear. However, an interesting design shape can be spotted where the boot meets the rear window. LED lighting should be fitted at the back and perhaps even at the front end. Expect overall body length and the wheelbase to grow.

If current BMW designs are anything to go by, then this particular car is a 3.0-litre twin turbo 335i which today makes 225kW (306hp) and 400Nm in standard form. Those figures will certainly increase. Some possible engines being mentioned include a new four-cylinder petrol turbo (shared with Peugeot/ Citroën) and a compact 6-cylinder twin turbo M3. Even a hybrid has been speculated.

The usual body shapes of sedan, coupe, convertible and Touring (wagon) will apply. Greater use of fuel-saving technologies based on BMW's Efficient Dynamics philosophy will be ensured across the range, including the M3.

Production of the 2012 BMW 3 Series begins in 2011 while the first M3 model, probably a coupe, will appear in 2012.

These things I now know: 1. BMW has recoiled in fear from the Bangle backlash. 2. "Same sausage, different lengths" is back! 3. Only BMW's niche products (sports cars and S-whatever-V hatchbacks) will have edgy styling (and by edgy I mean mutations on wheels). 4. I kinda like it. The new models might be less startling than the previous 3, 5 and 7, but they'll certainly age better and not be mistaken for Pontiacs. 2002s and E21, E30, E36 and even E46 3-series were conservative but they all still look great, and like the work of the engineers mattered more than the egos of the designers.

I think the people who bought the last generation "bangel-butt" 7-series and made it into the best selling 7-series to date, will disagree with your couch-potato comments. You claim to know "three things". Let's set that at your limit for now. Despite your foolish comments, no one is mistaking a bmw for a pontiac.

Wow, someone dropped out of charm school. Not sure what qualifies you to call me a couch potato. (I work in the auto industry and am a former BMW owner, and I think you mean "armchair quarterback" anyway.) The Pontiac line was hyperbole, the point being that BMW's overdone styling, in my opinion, will not age as well as its more businesslike designs, which I noted I'm pleased to see returning. And sales success does not make something beautiful. Oh, and you misspelled Bangle.

So now BMW is free to apply ribbed lower-body cladding or make the 5GT even more Aztek-like? The point is that BMWs became overstyled and felt less like true BMWs. They began to look like their own imitators, whether that be Pontiac or whoever does it next. And there are still plenty of Pontiacs on the road, so it's relief that the next 5er won't look even more like a 5-year-old Grand Prix than the current one does.

BMW is actually replacing the twin turbo I-6 with a single turbo engine. The power and performance are basically the same, but the single unit has better emissions. I think the single has faster catalytic convertor light off over the twin.

Indeed they'll use a single twin-scroll turbo, and they might use the 3.0 with a new twin-turbo setup on specific applications (Z4 "M", 135i "M", at around 330/350hp, and maybe even the next M3).

Seems to me this car is getting the same snot nose job the new 7, and to a lesser extent, the 5 have. I'm starting to miss Bangle. I always liked the 3 series coupe and hopefully this one won't disappoint.

BMW better start fixing all these HPFP failures on all these 135i's, 335i's, 535i's, etc.. It's getting very annoying. Mine failed for the 2nd time.

It certainly has grown....pretty close to the length of the 5er, maybe two inches shorter. However, the additional space is much needed in the 4-dr. LED's "perhaps even at the front end". Gasp!
