Employees at Elasis (Pomigliano), one of Fiat's R&D firms, have been a little trigger-happy with their cameras recently.  One of their workers leaked out photos of this concept (photos included), the Alfa Romeo Kamal, which we first saw at the Geneva Motor Show of 2003.

These photos, with Elasis headquarters in the background, were taken in September.  What is unknown is if this vehicle is a mule being used for testing, or an abandoned Kamal design study just being moved elsewhere.  The Alfa Romeo Kamal had been rumored for 2010 production on the Alfa Romeo 159 platform.  But those plans changed after the Fiat/Chrysler mashup.  Back in June, the speculation was that two SUVs would be built by Jeep, and get the A.R. shield.

However, with Fiat and Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne preparing to unveil the Fiat Group's short- and mid-term plans later this month, perhaps this SUV could be a sign of things to come.  Alfa Romeo has toyed with the idea of releasing a SUV for years, and Chrysler certainly has a number of potential partner vehicles available for re-branding.

[UPDATE 14.12.2009] A reliable source tells us it is a design demonstrator prototype that has been put on hold/cancelled.

It has Fiat Grande Punto front lights!

It's a nice car. Hope to see it in a near future as a mass production model.

I'd be a little surprised if Alfa/Chrysler would currently pick this model as an investment priority. Why dilute the re-introduction of this long missing car brand in the USA with crossover SUV that looks a lot like a Mazda with a retro nose. Chrysler and Jeep have all sorts of SUV/cross-over/mini-van thingys. They don't have high end cars with European flair. I would think that they would establish Alfa in that market first. Without Alfa being seen as a desirable and reliable car with a high level of refinement, who is going to pony-up extra for an Alfa crossover.

That's definitely not a mule, or a concept. That's a production ready prototype... I'm sorry to say, but anyone who can't see that should really get their eyes examined...

I quite like it, since it doesn't look aggressive like any other softroaders. I wish they could fix the bonnet shutlines or at least find a better way to hide it.

Yuck. Parts bin special (Punto headlights, 147 rear) with shopping cart wheels. Please don't bring this to the UK as Alfa has quite a good reputation.

Hmm, that's not the best looking car, and with those borrowed lights, it looks a bit cobbled together.

I think this is an old pre-prod car, maybe cancelled after the "plans changed". I don't thnik they'd use parts that old on a brand new car, plus it looks dated compared to existing Alfas (including the new Giulietta) and other soft-roaders.
