Toyota to Unveil New Compact Car Concept in New Delhi

Toyota to Unveil New Compact Car Concept in New Delhi
2009 Toyota Yaris

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the Japanese brand's India subsidiary, is set to showcase a new entry-level model at the 10th Auto Expo Automobile Show in New Delhi from January 5 to 11. The vehicle, codenamed EFC (Entry Family Car), will slot in below the Yaris. Production plans are already afoot and are scheduled to materialise from December 2010 at Toyota's planned second plant in India. The company aims to make 70,000 units in the first year.

"Both hatchback and sedan version of concept vehicle of the compact car will be showcased at Auto Expo", TKM Deputy Managing Director Sandeep Singh told the Press Trust of India. "It's a concept vehicle coming from Japan."

Toyota currently has 93 dealerships in India but wants to have 150 by the time the EFC goes on sale in 2011. This is a very important car for the world's biggest automaker as it aims to gain market share over a possible Suzuki / Volkswagen alliance and a hyped-up Tata with its ultra-cheap Nano. India is a fast-growing car market but much of its surge is in the entry-level segments.

The EFC will join other Toyota products sold on that market, including the Corolla Altis, the Fortuner, the Camry, the Prado and the Land Cruiser.

Toyota to Unveil New Compact Car Concept for India at New Delhi Show

Tokyo - TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces its production and sales subsidiary in India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private, Ltd. (TKM), plans to unveil a concept for a new compact car designed for the Indian market, as well as display 13 other concept and production vehicles, at the 10th Auto Expo automobile show in New Delhi from January 5 to 11, 2010.

The concept for the new compact car is to be unveiled at a TKM press conference on January 5. Other vehicles on display are to include the redesigned "Prado" and "Fortuner" SUVs and the India-market-leading "Innova" minivan.

The TKM display will also present Toyota's active approach toward developing modes of transportation for the future by showing the "i-REAL" personal mobility vehicle, the "Fine-S" fuel-cell hybrid vehicle and other concept vehicles.

What a snooze. Boring cars. There is a mistake in the article by the way. Volkswagen is now the worlds biggest automaker, not Toyota.

Definitely trying to combat the Tata Nano. Moreover, this Toyota model model will possibly also get the complimentary unintended acceleration...imagine all those unintended and out of control acceleration all over the place in Indian...scary.

u think so....or u would like vw to be no1 but that's not true and u know it!!!no way vw can reach toyota!!!whatever it does it will never even touch toyota!all these are marketing tricks in order to advertise...the good think is that they are trying just on paper to overtake toyota but the car in front is always a toyota!not to say lexus!

This is not for competing with Nano but for competiting with Tata Indigo Manza and Suzuki Swift Dzire and the likes. Tata Nano competitor from Toyota, if it ever comes, would be priced twice than Nano. Toyota prices its vehicles at ridiculous levels in India, so does Honda.

I'm given to understand the EFC will not actually be much smaller than the Yaris, but instead built of cheaper materials, with less standard kit, which effectively costs Toyota and the customer less. It's the same reason they sell the Innova people carrier instead of their American equivalent in India and SE Asia - it's just cheaper. akbars600 is right, it won't be a Nano-competitor, but it might play with the Swift, Indica Vista, Renault Logan etc. Unless Toyota does something amazing and punches the price down to the sub-Rs-5-lakh segment to take on the likes of the Hyundai i10 and recently-launched Chevy Beat.
