eRUF Stormster EV Based on Porsche Cayenne Revealed
eRUF Stormster

First claimed SUV with electric powertrain

Bavaria-based tuner RUF presents an all-electric Porsche Cayenne-derived SUV. Called the Stormster, the big vehicle is a major departure from RUF's big-power machines. It is closely related to the eRUF Greenster of Geneva 2009 which with it shares its power unit.

Driving the wheels is a Siemens electric motor whose own source of power is a lithium-ion battery from Li-Tec Battery GmbH, Europe's first lithium-ion battery manufacturer. Peak output is 270kW (367bhp) and a 0 - 100km/h time of 10 seconds has been quoted. RUF says the Stormster will reach a top end of 150km/h (93.2mph) and is capable of a 200km (124.2mi) range from a full charge. The car's total body weight is 2,670 kg (5,886 lbs) which is not light by any measure.

Winter tyres sized 295/30 R 22 were developed for the Stormster by Hankook. RUF then wrapped them around RUF classic 5 spoke lightweight wheels.

Fittingly and perhaps by design the "green" SUV is being shown to the public at the European Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

RUF has included a photo of its Dakara Cayenne styling package edited with an eRUF Stormster license plate suggesting the EV SUV can be equipped as such.

RUF introduces the first SUV with electric powertrain

RUF Automobile GmbH, located in the small Bavarian town of Pfaffenhausen, the manufacturer of high performance automobiles, introduced the first electric sports car (eRUF) from Germany in October 2008.

During the Geneva Motor Show, in March 2009, RUF presented an evolution of the first eRUF, widely known as "Greenster".
The eRUF family continues to grow with the unveiling of the "Stormster", the very first electrically driven SUV based on the Porsche Cayenne.

The Stormster is driven by a Siemens electric motor, with 270 kW (367 bhp) as in the eRUF sports car. The total weight is 2,670 kg which makes it capable of reaching 100 km/h in only 10 seconds. The top speed is 150 km/h, being able to reach a range of 200 km at one charge.

The lithium ion accumulators are supplied by Li-Tec Battery GmbH. Li-Tec is the first manufacturer of lithium ion battery cells in Europe, designed for the automobile industry using ceramic storage technology.

Hankook developed the winter tires for the all wheel drive Stormster which is fitted to RUF classic 5 spoke lightweight wheels. Tires of size 295/30 R 22 allow the best possible road grip.

The Stormster will have its first public debut during the European Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, (COP 15), Denmark from December 7th to 18th.

Wow RUF is really getting into the green movement. It looks as though when we move into full EVs the tuners will survive, not only that it seems that its these smaller companies that are leading the way. RUF is awesome!

RUF is a manufacturer, not a tuner. From Wiki: "Rufs are built from unmarked Porsche bodies and chassis. ...the company is recognized as a manufacturer by the German government." QED.

I know it's officially a manufacturer but as they dont actually develop or construct their own body or chassis they would seem to be more of a modifier. Nevertheless this IS a radically different car underneath and a very impressive feat.
