Since the all-new 2011 BMW 5 Series (F10) has been officially released with details and pictures, Munich does not seem to care if the Touring (wagon) model, currently testing in public, is fully clothed or not. On this occasion our spies caught the luxury sedan virtually naked, bar the rear end where the major differences are found when compared to the sedan.

The black and white camouflage mostly covers parts of the roof, the rear door, rear bumpers and the quarter panels. The rear side windows will most certainly feature the "hoffmeister kink" but the rear lights may not share their design with the sedan. Nevertheless these will have LED technology.

What it should adopt from the sedan are the engines, including the 3.0-litre turbo worth 225kW (306hp), the 4.4 twin turbo V8 making 300kW (407hp) and the 3.0-litre turbo diesel generating 540Nm. An M5 Touring will give an output of over 420kW (571hp) from its rumoured twin turbo V8 engine. Also expect the new 8-speed auto transmission to be used.

I thought the 5gt was suppose to replace this... now i'm just confused about the purpose of the 5gt

the purpose of the 5gt is the same as the purpose of any car. to make money for the company that sells it...

yes i know that... but the 5gt i thought was suppose to take over the market segment that the touring had because it basically provides the same +some... i would think that they would counteract each other. for example, reason why scirocco isn't introduced in the US is b/c it would take up all golf customers, etc

the 5GT is another direction for a 4 door coupe. instead of making a CLS competitor , they went another route. the 5GT was never supposed to replace the 5 wagon.

Unless it was confirmed by BMW, I wouldn't believe everything you read on WCF. I too though the 5 GT would replace the wagon, because it honestly looks a lit better.

I still do think the front of the new 5 is .. I feel like vomiting honestly. It looks cheap, boring and dated already. Bet they're working on the next facelift model like what they did to the previous 7-Series. Please change the ugly headlights BMW!!!

no surprise... and the GT was always just some silly niche that doesnt exist- for the US obsession with crossovers. The only cool 'crossovers' i can think of is the Renault Avantime.

I've recently test driven the 550i Gran Turismo and loved it. In person it is actually good looking you have to keep in mind it's a utility vehicle. It was smooth and quiet like a 7 but fully adjustable so it can handle in a sportier manner and it did look allot like the 7. The twin turbo v8 made it feel almost like my 2010 M3 the acceleration was awsome. I'd say the 5-series GT is a cross between a 750i and a 5-Series Touring with some X6 in it. It comes down to preference and personally I like the GT and the Touring, if I had to buy one I'd take the GT.

The 5GT is very good looking in person, yes, I mean in person, because the car looks alive when you stand next to it. It is amazing how well the car was designed. It is a different feeling.

I'm dissappointed from the way it looks, BMW should do something with the design.

BMW will not be taking advice from people that are from the nation of bankrupt car manufacturers!

BMW's last car designer was American. David Robb, their current motorcycle designer, is American. BMW just built a design studio in California which will presumably will be filled mostly with American designers. I presume BMW hired all of these people because it wanted their advice. Do you even think before you begin typing?

Is it just me, or are BMW moving towards an Audi design like look?

I like the way BMW has started to swoop the roof of their estates down instead of having it flat, gives it a more sporty look rather than the soccer mom's car.

better.... than the 5 series sedan, but still dissapointing. the 5 gt was not planned as a replacement for the touring, i think they wanted a car in a class with the A6 allroad, and volvo's xc70...and bla bla.... but in my opinion, it is a failure. it is expensive, it is bad looking, and i am sure i will not be convineced even when i will see it in the flesh. as it was when i saw the panamers....

I think the F10 ROCKS!!! And this F11 is far better proportioned than the 5 GT. The taper of the rear end of the car looks great. I would really enjoy seeing great SportWagons replace a great portion of SUVs. The F11, A6 Avant, CTS SportWagon, 3 Series Touring, Accord Touring (European model), Alfa Romeo 159 Wagon, and many others are great-looking cars. Keep 'em coming! Especially with a stick!
