I never understood why they made the B and A-class the way they are. I mean look at BMW's 1-series, that's the direction Benz should be moving in, not making Merivas and Zafiras with Mercedes stars on them...

you mean following the A3 surely. the A3 destroys the 1 Series in terms of sales, looks and practicality. (and the S-Tronic gearbox is still probably only 2nd place to the gearbox in the Ferrari California.)
i do however concede that the 1 Series is probably slightly more fun, tho having driven an S3 and a 130i back to back there's very little in it, and the green tech is better.

Actually what Mercedes needs is developing the right engine for their small cars, as BMW did with their twin turbo diesel and Audi with its turbo petrol. Looks B and A class, their engine-ranges is too bad.

I remember some time back about an article stating the A-Class and B-Class would be rear-wheel-drive?

"Although the B-Class was originially supposed to head across the pond to North American consumers, those plans were halted because of the strong Euro."
but the car IS available in north america. canada has been offered the b-class for a while now. vancouver, in particular, is crawling with them.
as far as i remember, canada represents a good chunk of north america....

I've heard suggestions that Mercedes-Benz--if they want to sell the B-class here in the USA--may build the car at their Alabama assembly line already used to build the M-class, R-class and GL-class SUVs.

I already like this car. Looking occasionally through the windshield of current B-merc, I've noticed that E-class looks pretty stupid behemoth in city environment and Renault Modus for example quit quirky by the way. Strange thing.

I will buy one, since I love the current B-class, I don't know why I would not be attracted to this funcitonal compact sport crossover.
