Electric powertrain, unique styling

Audi's CEO, Rupert Stadler, has confirmed the company is working on a new A2.

In an interview with Autocar, Stadler said "...we gave the A1 that nomenclature (so) there's clearly room for another product and another concept between the A3." He added, "If you don't have to explain a car like the A2, then it works."

While that's pretty vague, the A2 will reportedly be based on the upcoming A1. It will likely feature unique styling and an electric powertrain. Despite the similarity to Volkswagen's Up! electric vehicle, Stadler was quick to point out Audi will not use that model for the basis of the A2 or the rumored A0.

As you may recall, the original A2 was a slow selling model that was produced between 2000 and 2005. Criticized for its questionable styling and less than stellar performance, the A2 never caught on with consumers. In total, only 176,377 A2s were sold in its five year production run.

A9 is a great idea, for example to create a large coupe based on the A8 (competitor CL, XK ..)

Seriously. Let VW stick to the low end cars. Why doesn't Audi on the meantime focus on building cars that don't all look nearly identical.

Old A2 was a great city car. Fantastic fuel consumption, great reliability, and lightness thanks to the ASF.

Ex VW boss, Bernd Pischetsrieder, once made a statement which ultimately costed him his job. However, he was frankly honest when he mused that there's hardly any difference between VWs and Audis in terms of quality! Control stalks and overall dashboard designs are essentially similar, including platforms. That is what platform sharing does to generic and premium brands. I believe it is called 'conflict of interests'. However, it is the only way forward to guarantee 'economies of scale'.

I am a big fan of the original A2, that car really was ahead of its time. All new Audi saloons are boring!

The naming system doesn't really work. If the A1 were to be a Mini rival, wouldn't you call it the A2 seeing as it is a B-segment vehicle? And wouldn't A1 would be more indicative of an A-segment vehicle, aka the smart ForTwo?
