All New MG 6 Revealed at Guangzhou Auto Show - Production in UK
SAIC MG 6 - 1188

MG6 will be produced at a new plant in China as well as at MG's plant in Birmingham in the UK

MG is back as a volume automaker.

At the Guangzhou auto show today the British brand introduced its latest model - the MG6.

Details released were so few we could quote the entire description of the model from the press release:

"The MG6 is a sporting five seat fastback model, designed to capture the character of the MG brand and bring something different to the volume market."

Speculation is that the MG6 will be powered by either a 1.8 liter four-banger with 133 bhp and 183 Nm (135 lb-ft) of torque, or a 1.8 liter turbocharged engine with 160 bhp and 214 Nm (158 lb-ft) of torque. In either case, it's very volume-y model stuff.

The MG6 will begin production next month at a new MG plant in Lingang, China. The storied British automaker also plans to produce the MG6 at home in the UK, with production slated to begin in late 2010 at its plant in Birmingham.

"This is a milestone day for the iconic MG brand and for the UK automotive industry," said Guy Jones, director of sales and marketing for MG Motor UK, in the press release. But will there be enough buyers to help restore some pride in the British motoring industry?

International launch of all new MG

MG Motor is proud to announce today, the international launch of the MG6, the first all new MG motor car since the launch of the MGF sports car.

Guy Jones, Sales and Marketing Director for MG Motor UK said, "This is a milestone day for the iconic MG brand and for the UK automotive industry. MG has begun the international launch of an all new model that has been designed and engineered here in the UK, for the global automotive market. Currently we only build and sell the mid-engined TF sports car here in the UK, but we can now look forward to expanding the range of MG products."

The launch takes place at the Guangzhou Auto show in China and is the beginning of an exciting new global future for the MG brand. The launch in China, the world's largest automotive market begins the international roll out of sales of MG6 which includes the UK. Sales in China will begin in January and plans for the UK and other markets will be released during 2010.

It was also announced today that production of MG6 for the China market will begin at the brand new state of the art factory in Lingang, China in December 2009. It is also planned to commence production of MG6 at the Birmingham plant in the UK before the end of 2010.

The world famous MG brand has never had such a bright future as it starts to expand global sales with an exciting new range of products.

Yeah it will not be a worldwide success. Probably sell half decent in China, and thats about it. We won't be seeing MG dealerships popping up like VAG ones anytime...

MG could become several times bigger than the biggest it's ever been on that prophecy alone. I wish I could excited about this. But I fear the UK has turned its back on the brand some time back. The MG TF has been on sale since earlier this year at a good price and no one cares.

ok... the car looks quite interesting but considering the quality problems MG had before and the chinese parenting I don't know what will be the result

Chinese car (or should I say "cr*p" ?) with UK badge. Bummer, that some Brits will fall for that. But the looks aren't tragic after all...

Maybe quality won?t be too good and maybe it won?t be a huge success. We?ll have to wait till the car has been tested but from the lookings I think they have done a quite good job (exterior and interior), probably one of the best looking chinese cars.

Probably because it was designed and engineered in UK. This car is based on the Rover 75. It's only Chinese by ownership, and build (most of them anyways).

I cannot believe Abugatti can say what they have without WCF reprimanding them. I got BANNED from this site for some unknown reason for which WCF NEVER even had the courtesy to tell me why, despite sending the COUNTLESS e mails to explain themselves. Maybe they would like to explain why Abugatti?s comment was allowed to be added? Shameful that such comments are allowed?

everyone seems to forget that China is new to the car industry in an age where safety standards and expectations are so high. i bet if you apply today's expectations to japanese cars when they first started out, they would have performed just as badly if not worse. gotta give them credit for trying to adopt/reverse-engineer modern technology just like the japanese did. I'm sure they retained MG's design/engineering know how. that's one of the purposes of buying the company anyway!

@thedutchie that's no excuse for the poor safety of "modern" cars. Anyways, where they were built. If the chinese are honest to produce worldcars they have to revolute their imagine of the way they do that. @abugatti and freeway. It's free to comment here and there are many senceless posts day for day, but I hope you will learn to have better occupation then writing bullsh*t and about the car: The design is great, congratulation to the creators. I only don't see anything for calling this a MG
