Schumacher speculation races ahead on Monday

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo on Monday said he "cannot imagine" Michael Schumacher deciding to re-launch a full time formula one race career.

Schumacher, the only seven time world champion in the sport's history, is strongly linked with the second cockpit at Mercedes GP.

The 40-year-old German is under contract to Ferrari, so he would have to be given clearance by Montezemolo to race elsewhere.

Schumacher's teammate would be his 24-year-old compatriot Nico Rosberg, but he told reporters on Monday that "I don't want to comment on that".

Also facing the media, Mercedes' Norbert Haug and team chief executive Nick Fry similarly stirred the speculation by refusing to issue clear denials.

Asked to categorically rule out Schumacher, Fry said: "When will you ever say categorically anything in F1?"

Fry, who said he wants the identity of Rosberg's teammate to be known by Christmas, added: "We are here today to talk about Nico Rosberg and we should stick with that subject."

I think it's very unlikely that Schumacher will "jump the boat" from Ferrari to Mercedes: 1) he would give Mercedes valuable Ferrari secrets and technnical expertise; 2) despite being the F1 hepta-world champion he would still had to adapt to a new car, a new team... in order to be competitive again; 3) he's 40 and even if he's in shape you can't compare him with a 20-ish year old Pilot because the stress from racing (G forces, heat strike, body mass loss, etc.) would have serious implications on an older body and 4) he holds the record as having won 7 F1 Championships and that's not even at risk right now so what would he be trying to prove by returning to F1?... to assure fans he can be Champion again (unlikely in the "1st" year). So for me if he returned to F1 I'd say he would be better off as a Test Pilot or as a Team Manager/Owner, in pair with the work he already does in developing the Ferrari road cars! Not that I disapprove... because as a Mercedes fan I would love to see Schumy in a Silver Arrow ;-) ... but again: it's highly unlikely. Obrigado

Michael returning to the cockpit would be like the other Michael (Jordan) during his Washington Wizards era in his career... I hope he doesn't make the same choice. The option of taking on a role as some sort of a director with Mercedes (since it is reported that his contract with Ferrari for racing is not renewed) could be possible. The Germans would love to see their racing icon be involved with one of their teams.

Mike was still better than 90% of the NBA during his tour with the Wiz, Schumi will be no different. Would it tarnish his legacy? Maybe . . . but I would really love to see him show Lewis, Alonso, and the others how it's done! BRING HIM BACK!!!!!!!!!!
