The all-new sixth generation BMW 5-Series codenamed F10 has finally been revealed today.

In contrast to the current E60 generation which was characterized as being overly dramatic and baroque, the new F10 returns to a more graceful and conservative design reminiscent of the fourth generation E39, yet still aggressive and sporty. We are sure the F10 will win back a lot of alienated BMW fans from the previous Chris Bangle design era.

The new 5 Series sedan will launch with one eight-cylinder and three six-cylinder petrol engines as well as two six-cylinder diesels. Approximately three months later, the range will be rounded off by a direct injection four-cylinder turbodiesel.

Starting with the petrol units at the top of the range, the 550i TwinPower Turbo V8 makes 300 kW/407 hp, 535i twin turbo straight-six delivers 225 kW/306 hp, while the two straight-six engines with direct injection develop 190 kW/258 hp in the BMW 528i and, 150 kW/204 hp in the BMW 523i, respectively. For the diesels, the 530d produces 180 kW/245 hp and the 525d with 150 kW/204 hp. Lastly, the 520d and its four-cylinder makes 135 kW/184hp boasting an average fuel consumption figure in the EU5 test cycle at 5.2 litres/100 kilometres, the CO2 emission rating is 137 g/km (provisional figures with automatic transmission). BMW's new eight-speed automatic transmission is available as standard on all models (in Germany).

For the front suspension BMW is doing away with the MacPherson strut system that has been in use since 1965 and adopts a more sophisticated multi-link system already seen on the 7-Series F01. The rear suspension has been upgraded as well but remains the same in principle, also as a multi-link system. When equipped with a Sport Package, Adaptive Drive is added which includes Driving Dynamics Control, Dynamic Damping Control and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle's wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.

BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are featuring as standard Brake Energy Regeneration, a gearshift point indicator, active air flap control, and on-demand operation of ancillary units including a detachable a/c compressor. Body construction features aluminum components such as the doors, hood, front fenders and suspension to reduce weight.

A tour de force of driver's aid and infotainment features are available on the 5-Series. They include a Parking Assistant, Surround View, collision warning with application of the brakes in conjunction with Active Cruise Control plus Stop & Go, and a new Speed Limit Device. Further features also available are Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, a Head-Up Display, a High-Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with detection of individual persons, Park Distance Control and a back-up camera.

The latest fourth generation of BMW iDrive control appears in two versions: with 7.0-in. dimensions and 800 x 480-pixel resolution in standard form, or with the optional Navigation system, in a 10.2-in., 1280 x 480-pixel version with a wider range of features and functions as in the new BMW 7 Series. Displays are transreflective so that light from the sun actually makes the images on the screen brighter.

The 5-Series will be built at BMW Plant Dingolfing along side the new 2009 BMW 7 Series F01. The 5-Series F10 is based on the same architecture as the 7-Series as both vehicles extensively share components.

Dealer and press junket is scheduled for February 2010 in Lisbon, Portugal while European market launch takes place in March 2010.

Within the interior modern function and a superior ambience come together in perfect harmony, unmistakable style and clear orientation to the driver in the cockpit guaranteeing a truly unique driving and travelling experience.

Driving experience: supreme dynamics and outstanding comfort.

The most advanced drivetrain and suspension technologies ensure supreme sportiness and an even higher standard of motoring comfort all in one. At the same time optional Dynamic Driving Control enables the driver to set the suspension individually to his personal requirements. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is available with Adaptive Drive encompassing´Dynamic Damper Control and Dynamic Drive stability control, as well as BMW’s Integral Active Steering.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is making its debut with one eight-cylinder and three six-cylinder petrol engines as well as two six-cylinder diesels. The range is rounded off by a four-cylinder turbodiesel with an aluminium crankcase and common-rail direct injection. Maximum output in this case of 135 kW/184 hp makes the BMW 520d fitted as standard with Auto Start Stop the new efficiency benchmark in its segment. Average fuel consumption in the EU5 test cycle is just 5.0 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 56.5 mpg imp), the CO2 emission rating is 132 g/km (provisional figures).

The top-of-the-range BMW 550i comes with an eight-cylinder boasting BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection for maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp. The straight-six with BMW TwinPower Turbo, High Precision Injection and VALVETRONIC in the BMW 535i delivers maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp, while the two straight-six power units featuring High Precision Injection and lean-burn operation develop 190 kW/258 hp in the BMW 528i and, respectively, 150 kW/204 hp in the BMW 523i.

Straight-six diesels with the most advanced technology give the BMW 530d maximum output of 180 kW/245 hp and the BMW 525d an equally impressive 150 kW/204 hp. Fitted with optional BMW BluePerformance technology, the BMW 530d fulfils the EU6 emission standard. And it almost goes without saying that all versions of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan comply in full with the EU5 standard in Europe.

BMW EfficientDynamics: BMW 5 Series increasing the lead.

All versions of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan are available as an option with BMW’s new eight-speed automatic transmission. The BMW 550i comes as standard with BMW’s automatic transmission optimised for efficiency, just like EPS Electric Power Steering featured on all models.

BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are naturally featured as standard in appropriate combinations on each model, with features such as Brake Energy Regeneration, a gearshift point indicator, active air flap control, and on-demand operation of ancillary units including a detachable a/c compressor. Intelligent lightweight construction, finally, is ensured by features such as the doors, engine compartment lid, front side panels and suspension components made of aluminium.

Innovative driver assistance systems with BMW ConnectedDrive.

The driver assistance systems offered for the first time in the context of BMW ConnectedDrive include a Parking Assistant, Surround View, collision warning with application of the brakes in conjunction with Active Cruise Control plus Stop & Go, and a new Speed Limit Device. Further features also available are Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, a Head-Up Display, BMW Night Vision with detection of individual persons, and a back-up camera.

I guess people will have to get used to it. This design seems strange for now?

I'm reminded of the 3-series. In fact, this should have been a 2011 3-series. I noticed they traded out the ugly tiangle tail lights for a more Kia look in the back!!! Not impressed. Looks average and cheaper than it is.

looks like a big 3 series with 7 series interior. very bland design. i think the BMW Board decided not to go for anything exciting in the 5er.

What a joke.."The most beautiful BMW of our time" Might possibly be true..everything else is even uglier. This thing looks like a 3 series. Loved the older 5s much better. At least they had distinctive class.

I just want an opinion on BMW interiors, I think they are sensational, in comparison to MB's mismash in the E Class, but is it a good idea that all new BMW interiors are identical, does it make the 7 now appear down market or the 5 upmarket? MB seems to have a different feel wiht each class but with some familiar details, thoughts anyone?

Honestly, i like it! I'm sure that many of the ones who say the F10 is ugly will change their minds when'll see it live. Looks like a 3 series...looks like a 7 series. Of course, they are family.

i thought the 7 series will look better in the flesh. it doesn't. i don't like the front end of this new 5 series , it's like something is missing. and i like BMW , that's why i'm disappointed.

Congratulations. Like Audi, BMW now sells one car in three different sizes, just like a garment line. You can now buy a car in three sizes, 3,5, and 7. Ditto with GT series: GT3, GT5. Ditto with X series: X1, X3, X5.

Very very nice. Even people who don't like it at first know that the design will grow on you at some time or another - like it has done with all BMW models of late that people have ever doubted! I like it from the off though :) M version should be interesting - I think it will really suit that big chin spoiler

I am a bmw fan specially 5 series but the prior desing to this one (bangle`s) never grew on me I never bought one, and I had before since 1994 all the models Bangle`s desing divided the followers in lovers and haters; my humble opinion (and im shure BMW knows that well

Wow. All the teasing and shrouding was worth the wait. Rear decklid is shorter than my '94 3-Series (so I think it makes the 5er look athletic). L-o-n-g bonnet/hood looks elegant. The taper of the shoulder, side, and "running boards" at the rear looks sporting, too. The front end looks menacing (grrrreat!). Nice butt, too. In the photos where all iterations of the 5er are compared, I think this model looks very good. If I could afford to buy one, I would! I'll have to be content with having eye candy for now. Nice job, BMW!

While it is beautiful, it looks too much like the 3 Series with a back of a 7 Series. Truly disappointing for all the hype.

Look at the headlamps. Eerily similar to a 3.

LOVE IT! (ok, myb not love... but...)

I alweighs found the E60 to b unusually ugly, but I like this one. it LOOKS like a BMW. and yeh, it does look like a bigger 3 series, but all the Audis look like bigger versions of the one before it too (a8 is a bigger a6 which is a bigger a4...) so... it's w/e. the E39 looked just like a bigger version of the E46 too (IMO).

November 24, 2009 1:43 AM
It's nice but not as distinct as the E60. Agree looks very similar to 3 and 7. The genius of the Bangle era was that each class looked distinctive while maintaining a clear relationship. This is now back to the generation before when the E36, E39 and E38 3, 5 & 7's were all the same, and the generation before that too.

well it is not a revolution and it doesnt have to be, i think it is played safe therefore very easy on the eyes.It has both traits of the 3 and 7 series which it was designed to be.i love the seats , the interior is so ergonomically designed, i think it is above the e klass's. very good job, now hopefully im getting it before the next generation comes out ahahah hahaha ahh...why am i still hoping for a cs project resurrection?

It's nice. It indeed looks like a bigger 3er. The rear reminds me of the current E-Klasse, especially the lights, they feel kind of droopy, not sporty aggressive. Although I like the fact that there's a hint of E34 (more then E39 I think) in the F10, I would have preferred that it would be more progressive. Maybe from the E39 to the E60 was too big a step for most people, this F10 is a step back on the progressive design scale...too bad. The F10 is a nice design, but I would preferred if the F10 would have looked awesome! Let's see if the Touring will look more sporty in the rear.

look at the picture of the rear end... first row fourth down. This car still has the typical sporty BMW stance. Keeping in mind this is just a standard model without a sporty body kit.. i know it will be an eyecatcher on the road. BMW always releases cars that look minimalistic and cars that look sporty for those who want them with the sports kit. The bmw M5 is a completely different car from the the bmw 528i. The M3 is a differnt one from the 328i. Unlike the current C class, which looks very similar to the AMG or the A5, which looks so similar to the S5. bmw equip thier models in differnt ways. As for similarities with other class bmw's.. it has always been very obvious what class and size a bmw is... unlike the audis and mercedes benzes lately.

I still don't understand why they insist on using that horrendously annoying gear lever. I hate it so much. It is awful. Go back to the style that was on the E38 740iL (I drive it every day, no traction control and love it!) or something to that extent where the knob stays in place rather than snapping back. GRRRR

i have to confess following a recent trip to germany and driving on the autobahns, day time lights are a massive safety boon in seeing an on coming vehicle in the rear mirror, especially the side mirrors, but they are so annoying on approcah otherwise!

the current BMW 5 (E60) is much classy I'm sad to say. I like the shape of F10, but its headlights cannot convince me that it is a better design than the best ever design of E60's one, plus the F10's tail lights remind me the infiniti G35/ Nissan skyline mixing the current BMW 3.

But after all it is still the best looking sedan in its class, especially the ugly current E-class and the indifferent current A6.

November 24, 2009 5:17 AM
The new 5-series? More like an overgrown 3-series. The evolution of design photo is surely a mistake. Looks like they put the last two models in the wrong order. The E39, E60 was so right - great stance, great design features and exquisite engineering. I hope we're not in for the cloned look BMW had going year

It doesn't matter if it's beautiful or not. Because sedans aren't necessarily supposed to be beautiful. As long as the new 5 series looks good and pleasant to eyes, carrying cutting edge technology, smooth and silky, i bet that thing is gonna sell like hot cakes.

som3aa
November 24, 2009 5:56 AM
An extended 3-series? they should call it 323L for example , i dunno what is wrong with Bmw and Mercedes , people really need to stop buying those ugly cars to send a message that they r not willing to buy ugly designs anymore!! i don't like the car , really this should be the next 3-series! I think the current E-60 looks better 100 time , i love the current E-60.

For years the premium brands had been striving hard to varnish their looks, both exterior and interior. Audi can strive into the top three not only bcoz of its technology, but most importantly their look and style. BMW's several recent models can sell like hot cakes mostly because they look good (and because they're BMW of course). Jaguar's recent success on the new XJ is for sure the success of the brand new style. Which model that was thought ugly can sell like hot cakes?

PHOTOSHOPED! jk, although I wish it was.. seriously it looks OK, but 5-series shouldn't look OK, it should look sporty and silky... an innovation, just like the current E60.. I'm a bit disappointed to be honest, this should be the next 3-series, and let Bangle design a new 5-series. Not to mention the resemble between the rear of this car and Infinity G35

peterjames7
November 24, 2009 6:54 AM
i dont like it, i didnt think it was too bad untill i seen it moving on the road, it just looks awkward, loving the interior and the fact bmw are no longer being stingy on the equipment, i wonder if the leather and uprated stereo as standard in the uk has anything to do with the fact jag xf comes with these items as standard and is a sales success here. we normalyy get the 5 way later than everwhere else but not this time, finally learnt ur lesson bm?

Not bad, I was expecting something much better.

This is a mix of the 3-series, Z4, 7 series and older 5 series.

It's quite weird that this car reminds me of so many cars when I look at it.

The front end: Z4/E39 5 series. The back: E34 5 series / minisize 7 series. Overall profile styling: bigsize 3-series.

I am waiting to see it live with/without the M-Package, I know the //M5 will look good anyway though.

November 24, 2009 11:48 AM
it is a very good move from BMW. Even that i have said before that is a 3 series facelifted back with 7 series front .. that would be a only a good mix for the buyer !! The actual 7 is very good in my opinion and sharing many parts with the 5 it only makes better the new F10. I need to see it live, but in pictures seems very much to resemble the actual 3 series ...

Hello guys! The truth is that i saw the photos yesterday for the first time...i saw it twice...and so on. today, i must say that the design grows on you. The only thing curious is that every car that BMW launches has always the same type of comments against it. When the model ends it's life cicle, it's amazing how those comments turn the opposite...and yes i'm talking about the E60. I always liked the car, and i like this one too, and most of us will like it too.

This design is really awkward, but as usual, time brings me on this design. Before, I hate this design very much because it looks so weird and not progressive as much as my current E60. However after I saw the picture twice, then I got into its new design. Yeah BMW has one something unforgivable for the front bumper and rear lamp, but if they replace the total red rear lamp with white & red as usual, I think it will be nicer, the front bumper will be boosted by the upcoming M-Package. Moreover, the interior is nice, but lacks of soul, BMW should do better job as Audi does. One dissapointment is on the headlamp, BMW forgets to put the eye lid, that looks awesome in my E60.

BeEmWe
November 24, 2009 6:03 PM
Yeah! Well said! It's a shame they dropped the eyebrow. It looks awesome on my E60. Still, I think this car has made mine look inferior :( I didn't like the E60 when I first saw it, but it grew on me over time and now I have one. This is BMW's secret weapon. Growing appeal that lasts long. And as always, I think you must see a BMW in flesh. Very few cars look better than their photos and BMWs are exceptions!

I have been waiting to see this car for many years, and the same with the e-class. Now i can compare the new 5-series to the new E-class but only from the picture and the car that wins with the better design is for sure the E-class. I was hoping to see something amazing from bmw because i was so sure that i would buy this car instead of the new E-class but as many have said, it looks like a bigger version of the 3series. Im sure if bangle designed this car it wouldve looked different. There is something that maybe nobody has mentioned on this website. If you notice, the new 5-series has taken over from the old E-class, and the new E-class has taken over from the old 5-series, both cars have gone the other way, the new E-class got boxy like the old 5-serise. The new 5-series has gone curvy like the old E-class.

Anyways im not happy with this car at all, but i will wait and see it in real like how i saw the new E-class in real and loved it.

Now i cant wait for the new Audi A8, im sure that picture will be something different.

I can't honestly say that this car is in any way 'ugly.' However, I also cannot say that this car is BMW!!! A BMW is supposed to physically reflect a perfect combination of aggression, sophistication, sportiness and it usually exudes more masculine characteristics than feminine. This BMW, although debatably attractive, does not reflect BMW. Admittedly, although a fan of BMWs, I must say physically, the newer Audi range are a breath of fresh air...

I'm sorry, but I've looked at this again and again and I still think it is a disappointment. I mean this really looks like it should be the new 3 series. It looks more like a 30 grand car and not a 50 grand. I would certainly chose the new Jag, new Acura, styling over this.

scrtachy996: I also have a thing for the older jags but jaguar is not what it used to be. They lived just off the name for way too long and they lost out big time. They are making some decent efforts now but to be honest i think right now they can really only complete with the likes of volvo and build what you call "decent cars for individialists" I mean this 5er and the e class are in a completely different league

It is almost as if the sole purpose of the 5er GT is to make this car (the 5er) look low, wide, athletic, and sophisticated. I do hope BMW will send the 530d to the states with the option of a manual transmission. I've been wanting that combo for YEARS! Please, God, please!

Beautiful! a little long in the nose, but i can get used to that, the front end and lights are a lot more like the Z4 than I thought they would be from the spy shots. I thought it would be more like a scaled down 7 series, but I'm liking this a lot more. Beautifully sculpted, I love how the shoulder crease is carried back well-defined right to the tail light, and doesn't get fade out and get too sharp like the 3 series sedan.

It's quite funny reading some of the comments regarding the new 5-er. Let's put it like this. People are b*tching about what it looks like, what it doesn't look like, it's a Kia, all sorts of nonsense and all i gotta say on that front is GROW UP! I think because the Bangled 5 series was such a shocker, the new understated design language BMW is incorporating just looks bland and boring. Well not really. Yes it looks like a 3 series on steroids and a 7 series on a slim fast diet, but the truth of the matter is, the 5 series was always supposed to be a quietly styled car with a hint of sportiness. I think BMW pulled off the design flawlessly...well not quite, the headlights are a little piggy, but aside from that, it's an understated executive express. It reminds me of the old E39 5 series, and just think, when the new M5 arrives, it's going to be the same story. It'll be what an M5 was always supposed to be; A quietly styled monster.

I never claimed it as a fact, i merely said that i think it never won, I dont think that would be considered lying...well anyway what you sent are nothing but subjective opinions of most probably biased writers. I personaly have a different idea about a good car test. I did not see anything like measurements of interior noise levels, brake distance, consumption, time it took to do the cone track etc etc. This is just some bloke telling us which car he likes better. Funny thing is that except the first one they are all British. I have seen a milion cases where British car testers push absolute garbage just because it is from their country. They cant seem to get over the fact that their country is no longer a car super power like it used to be a long time ago.
