Long and low-slung

These exclusive Audi A7 spy photos reveal a car that's very much production-ready. No heavy camouflage, no black and white psychedelic paint and no heavy security. Audi's four-door coupe looks to have a new front end with a new bumper plus pointed headlights.

It looks similar to the A5 Sportback but with different B and C pillars. Typical of a sports coupe the front doors have no frames. The small rear side window is sharper than the more kinked A5's. Overall the A7 seems lower and longer too, with stretched front and rear overhangs. An aerodynamics spoiler sits atop the boot lid which appears to have the same opening style as the Porsche Panamera's.

Audi is of course releasing the four-seat A7 as a challenger to the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the new Porsche Panamera and the Aston Martin Rapide. All three rivals are about 5 metres long.

As a high-end vehicle the A7 will sport some pretty powerful engines, including a 3.0-litre force-fed petrol, a new turbo V8 and a V8 TDI pulling around 800Nm. Quattro AWD will feature and work in tandem with a 7-speed automatic transmission.

Expect to see the A7 in the metal within the next couple of months.

so what's the point on having A5 SB and A7? almost the same size but different b and c pillars??

Well, this is all about car makers nowadays: make so many useless cars as you can.

*yawn*... i agree. waste of time. audi would be better to spend their time, money and resources on improving driving dynamics and improving their designs. another same sausage different length case.

they improved their driving dynamics. check out the new S4 with the new sport differential. they plan to offer that diff as an option to other models.

err exactly how is this a foor door? it clearly has a hatchback rear end... and what therefore is the point of an A5 when that and this look near identical. come to think of it all audis look identical. actually whats the point of any of them then if thats the case. i hate them to the max. their xerox styling smacked on to every model. what a joke.

The same point as having an A4, A6 & A8; the main difference is the size.

November 21, 2009 3:47 PM
i'm sure there are more luxury options on the bigger models, the size isn't the only difference.

im a little disappointed that they havent used the grill and shape of the lights from the concept, i must say i think the new cls will be a much better lookin car than this from the spy pics and the current form of the designs merc is producing at the min, the e class coupe is a magnificent lookin vehicle on the road

I'm a big fan of Audi and I've expected them to come out with something new on this model. Especially because it's suppose to compete in such an exclusive segment of market. The profile of this car looks too much like the current A6, except the headlights. I thought they would use the new six-angle grill like the one on A7 concept...

I actually like the design for this. Buty reminds me of the saturn astra a bit tooo much for my tastes

The overall sillouette is far better proportioned than the 5 series GT, but (like peterjames7) I, too, am disappointed that the front end grille and headlight design of the concept was scrapped form something so banal, bland, and (almost) pedestrian. I'll bet the great rear-end design elements of the concept were also left on the design-room floor. If this model is too bland and too much like the A5 SportBack, I imagine the less-expensive A5 will cannibalize sales from this A7.

i was actually at an audi day, testing there new models in a nice hotel environment recently and they had the new a5 sportback there, amongst others, bearing in mind i had an a5 for a yr but i now drive an xf, all i thought the whole time was around the a5 was im in an a6, oh it looks like a new a6, it feels like a new a6, but ultimately when i drove into the car park and seen my xf i couldnt wait to get back behind the wheel of such a brilliant involving car again. from the looks of these pics it looks as though the a7 may follow that trend, unfortunate really they had an opportunity to do something really interesting with this car and just like diesel dog i can see the equally boring a5 sportback taking sales from this

Let's widen the list. A1,A2,A3,A4,...A1001... I don't say all, but most Audi's look identical to each other. Adding on that, they're bland. The only product I like from Audi is the face-lifted Q7.

As an Audi driver, I'm disappointed with this, it actually looks quite cheap, maybe it is still a pre-production model. But even my new 2009 A4 Avant isn't nearly as good as my 2006 model in terms in dynamics and build quality. VW AG is watering down the brand big time.

I agree with you. The plastic feels a lot thinner and the feel isn't the same. It is like comparing the new TT and the old TT. Huge difference!

This makes me ask..what exactly was the point of an A5/S5 sportback.

michelin901
November 21, 2009 7:50 PM
the thing looks like a civic. especially the profile and the rear end. not too surprised by another bland design. hopefully the new a8 saves audi. not a fan of any other model in the range.

stunning...i like it way better than that stupid bimmer 5 GT...anyway, looks @ all the comments here, what a big different! if it is a bimmer, all those bmw fanboyz will say "nice", "beautiful", "want it"...all the nice words, even on tht stupid 5 GT...

Car is ok but that's what I think about the entire range, same s**t different bucket. They are bringing cars out every five minutes - and as we know, there's plenty of VW under there with a premium price.

you have to kiding me? some assssho....s are such a idiots here. i can say the same about every singel bMW or Merc, but i don't, becouse each model are diferent A5, A4, A7, 5series, 3series, C-class, E-class, DB9 or Vantage, every singel peugeot and ford looks the same only diferent size, lights and engines.... Great job Audi again, more models more money.... And i wish all the best with up coming new A8, R4, A1, Q3, R10 and ofcourse E-Tron ;)

I doesn't look bigger than the a5 sportback, it doens't look bad, but an extra 5 inch to the bonnet would look a lot better.

This is suicide for audi. Useless, waste of money, waste of time. I mean who would buy this? I'd rather have the A5 coupe, old people aren't gonna drive this if this is what they are aiming for :). They think they can kill Mercedes and BMW's market but their wrong. They are spelling their own death.

Hmmm, wont look as good as the CLS from this side profile. Im guarantying the front to look like an A5 so again no challange. I'd buy it if it has the typical Audi interior which is undoubtably the best.

i used to see more audis on the road but seem fewer now... i think more people are sharing the same view as me that audi is the most heartless and boring brand in its price segment .... they got so many redundant variants of each line... some lines don't even deserve to exist, e.g. 3, 6 and q5... when they see someone coming up with interesting concept, like CLS, 135i... they just copy it... i don't see any of their lines are original... not to mention all of them look like the same shxt..

It definately won't look better than the CLS even before the facelift. I'd prefer the A5 Sportback any day though. VW is killing Audi trying to compete in every market segment. Jack of all trades masters at none. Audi must find it's Niche Market quick. R8 is the only car that they can really pat themselves on the back for.

Right now it's Audi's time to shine, with BMWs currently eroding their own design heritage, Jaguars losing their physical characteristics, Lexus grasping at straws and Mercedes designers being confused, it's obvious that Audi is now capitalizing on this situation, and manufacturing various unnecessary models, confident to capture the present market. Milk it Audi, milk it, for you cannot be certain of it's longevity...

Originality is fast disintegrating in the global auto industry. The reason for that is frantic competition; first to market, first to profit. Design-wise, Audi never used to follow the crowd, but are being forced to do so as it's financially expedient. The CLS showed Mercedes Benz haven't lost their touch. They can even win next year's ECOTY 2010 Award for the new E-class! The 'coupaloon' market is huge and cannot be ignored, not even by the trendy Audi! Had they kept the Sportback Concept's design cues, it would have been stunning! Time will tell on this one.
