New Urus set to compete with Ferrari's next Enzo

Lamborghini isn't one of those automakers that needs to readily respond to some ephemeral new niche created by a competitor. But as a company founded to compete against Ferrari, their rivalry is the stuff that automotive legends are often made of.

Cars UK is reporting that Lamborghini is developing a new model called the Urus to compete with Ferrari's next Enzo (the Ferrari FX70 beater). This model will be separate from the Murcielago replacement known as the Jota, and will be slotted below the Urus. So two new models are in development here, just to keep things clear.

According to a Cars UK source, the Urus will have a modified version of the Jota chassis, which is made out of carbon fiber. As opposed to the Jota, which has a body composed of both aluminum and carbon fiber parts, the Urus's body will be made solely out of carbon fiber and will come with active aerodynamics.

The Urus will share the same 6.0 liter V12 engine with the Jota, only the Urus will get it worked up to close to 800 hp, while the Jota will have to settle for about 700 hp. This will mean the Urus will likely crack the 3.0 second mark in the 0 to 100 km/h sprint time.

The Jota is expected to make its debut sometime next year (2010). The Urus will only come later, probably in 2011 and only making it to dealer pavement by 2012.

Please note the artist rendering above is only for illustrative purposes.  Special thanks to Active-Design and Sergio.

Has Lamborghini gone cheap, using the same underpinnings and the same engine for both of its upcoming models? I think every Lamborghini model should be special. Not something that has been just modified from another model.

The concept artist rendering looks like the result of a breeding program of a Murcielago and a Gallardo, instead of being something completely new.

I kind of agree with you, but a Lamborghini is special enough as it is. It seems to me that they are trying to make that engine as good as it can possibly be for the base model, so that people who buy the lower end can still have a great experience. There are always going to be people who are going to ask why they didn't make that engine as good as it can be to begin with. Why make something as good as it can be, then make something not as good for a cheaper car in such a high-end market?

Exactly. IMO, they should have kept with the V10 for the lower range model and the V12 for the higher performing model. Or at least make the V12 with different displacements for the two different models. And the same thing with using the same chassis, but with different materials.

It's really like saying "Hey, we made this awesome car that is light and very powerful. But if you can't afford this one, we also have this cheaper model. It's basically the same car, but it uses less advanced materials and is therefore heavier, and we also detuned the engine for you."

I have felt that way about Lambo's for a while (in reference to not being something new). This company is getting to be so much like Jaguar was before it's last two new models. They are living far too long on a core style that was great thirty-five years ago. The Countach goes back to 1974 and each Lambo since has been a Jaguarish scale of reinterpretation.

...Audi has the cheaper version of a Lamborghini it's called the Audi R8...

This rendering reminds me of a 2006+ Mitsubishi Eclipse with a complete makeover...

No thanks, Autoficianado. V12TDI? OR V10 QUATTRO? NAH, You can never compare an Audi with the dynamics of a Lambo. No offence. I'd prefer an M3 over a boxter and a Panamera over the 7-series, then I'd still have the Lambo Murcielago for extreme sports.

oh wow, you already tested all these cars...??

It is certainly much better than the Reventon, which was essentially a reskined Murcielago. Exciting news, if only to have something nice to vicariously dream about.

With the exception with the limited Reventon, if I were in the market for cars like the Enzo, I would go for the brilliant Zonda F. I wonder what Pagani is up to now

Nederina, who knows. Maybe (hopefully) they make a new model that kicks ass everywhere!

Well why don't you shut up if you don't have anything to say related to this article?

Wasnt the jota the low end back in the day, like the equivalent of the gallardo today. It was a smaller engine than the range topping countach. Either way glad to see the Jota name come back, my favourite movie scene of all time has a Jota in it. Rocky IV, the robert tepper - no easy way out scene before he goes to russia.

You're thinking of the Jalpa. Jota was the name of a special single Miura test vehicle.

A quick internet search:

A Urus (now extinct) was a very large, powerful and savage ancestor of domestic cattle. A somewhat logical choice of name in keeping with Lamborghini's odd method of naming cars.

A "Jota," according to urbandictionary.com, is a "Mexican term for a homosexual male."

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jota

I'm guessing that Lamborghini will NOT debut the new Jota at the 2010 Mexico City International Car Show.

Could you possibly point out where have I been stupid? Unless you can properly justify calling me stupid, then it's you who is stupid.

It wont look like this if Audi have anything to do with it.. which is a shame! Bring back the Lambo styling of old

"...just to keep things clear" - this line follows one of the most ambiguous, loaded and unclear paragraphs in WCF history. Let me try and understand this - none of the cars mentioned here is a 'baby' Lambo. FX70 is the name for the next Ferrari Enzo (and not F70, like we'd imagine). The 'Jota' is the replacement for the Murcielago, but is not the car pictured here. The 'Urus', pictured here, is essentially the replacement for the Reventon, i.e. a slightly faster, flasher, much more expensive version of the same car, sold as a special edition to rival the F70 (or FX70 beater, as the article says), which itself commemorates another decade of Ferrari. And yes, wasn't it reported that the Estoque would be called Urus too? Is this just a name that CAR magazine likes to throw around everytime they hear of a new Lambo? Haha.

Cartoon rendering doesn't help its chances at all. Non-starter I'm afraid. Lamborghini should set the record straight.

This rendering is atrociously terrible.

On the other hand, It would be very interesting to see what Lamborghini comes up with to compete with the Enzo's successor.

The rendering looks like the Lamborghini Cala Concept Car of 1995, just lower ground effects this time around. It can be seen here: http://www.lambocars.com/archive/others/cala.htm

WHAT'S WRONG WITH LAMBORGHINI.... Every lambo is supposed to be unique by itself...not something that shares its features with another lambo thats cheaper....SHAME...
