why not? more gears the better fuel economy, aka the better sales perspective they have on other cars. made advantages... on disadvantage... overall price of the car.

You are right, but the price will jump up, as you know, more gears means more torque and what kind of torque anyway you will need id for this small car?

Why would the S1 be less powerful than the most powerful A1? Doesn't seem very logical.
200hp and only 122Nm of torque from the 1.4 TFSI? Sounds like an engine that you rev until the valves come off to get anywhere. Unless there's a typo in the article.
EDIT:
Your article has mixed up the horsepowers and the torque of the 1.4 TFSI. It makes 122hp and 200Nm. So the S1 would have more oomph than the 1.4 TFSI A1 as you would expect. Here's the complete list of speculated engines, from the autobild.de site:
1.2 TFSI 2V, 86 PS/160 Nm ? 1.4 TFSI 4V, 122 PS/200 Nm ? 1.4 TFSI 4V, 180 PS/250 Nm (the S1) ? 1.2 TDI 3V, 75 PS/180 Nm ? 1.6 TDI 4V, 90 PS/230 Nm ? 1.6 TDI 4V, 105 PS/250 Nm ? 2.0 TDI 4V, 143 PS/320 Nm. The 2V/3V/4V markings mean valves per cylinder.

surely they'd have to use the 2.0 TFSI from the Golf GTI for the S1? otherwise the car would be destroyed by the Mini Cooper S JCW
November 20, 2009 2:40 am
The autobild article says that they might make an RS1 to fight the Mini Cooper S JCW.

in my opinion i believe they shouldn't name it S1 because the Audi S1 is a legend and no car should be named after it... i can't wait to see it in real though, and i expect it to be a very good car

I think 7spd transmission coupled to a 1.4 engine is a bit over kill.
November 20, 2009 2:14 pm
Why do you think so? Nissan has a continuously variable transmission on a 1.5 liter NA petrol engine (105hp IIRC). It's all for the fuel efficiency.

I believe that 1.4L is a better choice for the S1 than a 1.6L (which the VAG currently lacks).
The Q1 is obviously a rival of the Mini Cross*****, the Soul and the replacement for the A-Class. Audi's X1- and GLK-fighter will be the Tiguan-based Q3.

I agree with you, as long as VAG 1.6 l petrol engine is even less powerful that the 1.4 l TSI, they should throw it. Maybe a twin turbo diesel engine with 200+ HP will make more senses and deliver frugal fuel efficiency and stunning performance. Then what will happen if VW also launches the new Polo with Gti label? will it be a similiar case as new Golf & scirocco R compete with their sibling (but a lot of more expensive) S3?

Audi's Pricing Strategy on this car will either be A1 standard or grade F flop against its rivals in the premium supermini class. Brooding design style from the makers of the R8.
