Baby Mercedes SLS AMG

‘Tis the season for making babies in the motor industry. Not only are engines being downscaled but entire cars are resized to fit the recession and the environment's demands. In conforming to this trend, according to hearsay, Mercedes-Benz has begun the process of developing a smaller, more affordable SLS AMG.

"Mercedes' management has been very supportive of AMG's efforts in developing the SLS," an unnamed source is quoted by Autocar. "The feedback we've received since showing the car at the Frankfurt motor show has been extremely encouraging. A second model that will project a similarly exclusive image but be more accessible in terms of its pricing is already in planning."

The speculated sports car would naturally have shorter and narrower dimensions, and would give up the expensive gullwing doors. Its positioning is said to be higher than the current SLK 55 AMG. Buyers will eventually be able to choose between a coupe and a roadster. Current segment rivals include the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Audi R8 V8.

Power will come from the rumoured mid-front mounted twin turbo V8 with over 373kW (507hp). It will send all of that power to the rear wheels via a 7-speed double clutch and a limited differential slip. The 0 - 100km/h sprint should be around 4.5 seconds.

As a true SLS AMG brand extension the baby model will also get a fully electric powertrain like the SLS eDrive.

Prices are reported to start at around £80,000 (US$134 700/ €90,000) when it goes on sale in 2013.

looks even uglier. twin turbo v8 with 507 bhp..what a 6.2 litre biturbo? pathetic. MB, snap out of it...

This is where the SLS should've been positioned in the first place. Risky strategy this IMO. If it looks too similar you take sales away from the real one, and if it's going to be a similar size and built on the same platform as SLK and share components but priced much higher then people will just get the SLK. So in both cases you're splitting sales. N20_Purge is right - just make it the next SLK.

If this is true... what on earth is the point?? It seems so irrelevant. Yes, if it is intended to look very similar, it may be a problem, not because it'll take away SLS sales (as it will be significantly less expenisive) but because it'll ruin the SLS' specialness. And It will just make it obvious that its owner can't afford the real deal. (Not to generalize, of course the owner may actually like it) If it'll be an SLK replacement that looks different enough from the SLS then that could probably work out.

I'm hoping that MB has a rear-engined demon planned for the near future. I think that's what alot of us are burning for. Not to play horsepower games but for pure stupendousness!

I can only say that Mercedes wants to create something like the Audi R8 and the Nissan GTR that stirs the new generation's soul but a Mercedes?

Totally irrelevant to this article...but what car in the $60k-150k sports car segment does the Porsche Carrera (in all forms)not compete with??? It's absolutely fantastic how much Porsche is stretching that car.

yeah but it's also devalued it's brand. the 911 used to compete with the V8 Ferraris, and now it competes with Merc/BMW/Audi/Jag.

the 911 turbo and GT2 compete against the Ferrari V8.

why not just one of those SD (super-deformed) SLS instead? MB is trying to squeeze their cars everywhere.

i think their money would be better spent trying to get the SLK to compete with the Boxster dynamically and the TT in terms of style and cruising.

you all need to go to the september issue of Automobile magazine and see the 2011 SLK it is beautiful like a baby SL its longer, bigger trunk and weigh 200lbs less. I dont like the Idea of this car, MB is diluting its base if they do it and there is no need for it.Keep doing this and it will be whats so special about owning a Mercedes Benz. IMHO

by the way the TT is just so ugly and has less functionality as a daily driver, that it could never never compete with an SLK in my garage, and boxter, yeah so what theres a million of them on the road, and they look tierd.
