Believe it or not the Corsa is about to go off-road starting in 2011. Here we have spy pictures of an Opel Corsa sports utility vehicle (SUV) test mule.
Underneath this Meriva body is a car riding on a higher suspension and featuring a wider track. It has some rugged looks to suit the small SUV image. The wheels arches appear muscular while the bumpers are fitted with protective plastic.
The Corsa SUV will employ small petrol and diesel engines including the 1.3-litre and 1.7-litre. Some (including all the diesels) will have turbocharging to optimise performance and fuel efficiency. The range won't be entirely 4x4 however; an entry-level model is thought to only come in 2WD. That said, a hybrid model is rumoured to be under consideration as well.
The ultra compact SUV market already has players like the Fiat Panda and the Daihatsu Terios at the bottom end. Above that we will see future vehicles such as the MINI Crossman and the rumoured Audi Q1.
