About time. It was 25 years by its sell-by date, and it's a disgrace that it was allowed to remain in production for so long when better alternatives were availible for decades. That interior in the picture shown is inaccurate though. The Citi Golf recieved a new interior a few years before production ended. Here's a link to the interior. http://www.motoring.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=1828&fPicId=79697

I live in Brazil and (FOR SURE) i'd rather buy this Golf then our 2009 rubish VW Gol... It has pretty serious issues on its flexfuel engine. I'm pretty sure this City Golf would make a lot of success here. By the way a 2009 1.6L VW Gol costs about US$ 20,500!!! Starting with US$ 17,750 with 1.0L engine...

oh man, I rented a Gol when in Argentina and drilled it @ 160 km p/h down your beautiful highways from Buenos Aires to the coast... some odd grinding noises from down below throughout the trip! Highly amusing to see the name at first after growing up with Golfs in all their editions. I also had owned a MK5 GTI for 2 years but the MK5 still wasn't out in that country yet, only the MK4. Wonder if that's changed since?

Woah..... I was not even aware that they were even still mass producing the Mk1s. You learn something new every day.

It was a No.1 seller until a few years ago. However, as of now, it's still one of the best selling cars by a significant margin. The VW Polo and Toyota Yaris normally compete for the number 1 place. It's very popular because it's more manly in terms of looks at the price. Compare it with cars like the Getz and you will see why it has remained so popular especially among image conscious youth. The ubiquity of spares and simplicity of maintenance is another plus for it. As for 'death trap'... Well, perception is not always backed by reality. The Golf MK1's demise is not a reflection of love for the car, rather the drop in sales is an indication of frustration with VW's manufacturing quality and pathetic customer service.

At least this had character something since the mk3 the golf has lacked in spades . If it sells and people want it why not carry on manufacturing it ? not everyone is so vain to wory about the badge or how old thier car is or how long its been produced . amazing how so many of you on here know so little apart from the stuck record of german is best big engine etc etc

They added an airbag and dash out of an old skoda Fabia. VWSA also launched a R-line edition last year with an 1.8 90 kw motor the same as the original GTi and a modern body kit, which was also limited to 100 units. Im not a VW fan but living in SA this car has some part to do with everyone living in this country's lives. And Finally it came to an end. Rumours has it here in the metro where VW is located is that it will be replaced by a "metro" the current shape polo with an 1.4 liter motor stripped out to its bear essentials. here is a link to the R-Line http://www.motoring.co.za/index.php?fArticleId=3787829

Every South African has had some sort of interaction with the Citi Golf, either been in one, owned one, hit one, hit by one, raced one, got your ears shaken by the sound coming from the boot, annoyed by one stuck on the side of the road. I hate this car because it has never evolved, it's not a bad car per se, just a terrible car for that price when there are more capable asians on the road. I love this car cause it has taken me places and back without problems.

Shame Really. I Think They Should Of Had The Last 1000 Ltd Models Based On The Original Mk1 Gti 3 Door, A Bit Like The Mk1 Campaign Editions. I Think I Would Of Paid Out For One. "Love The Mk1 Gti :-)"

I was privileged to visit Umshlanga Rocks, Durban, South Africa, six years ago and I realised VW cars are all the rage in SA! They call it Citi over there, but it's what the SA tuners do to these cars that is quite a revelation. These guys bolt on mk4 face onto a mk1 car or vice versa, including many other creations. Build quality is top notch and their VR6 engines are highly sought after. As a mk4 Golf GTi owner, this is the end of an era as the mk1 remains the daddy of all hot hatches. However, technology has moved on to a new stratosphere! The mk5 and mk6 GTi are both epic driving experiences and has taken the common man to a new level. RIP Citi.

There are ordinary VW Golf Mk1 and Mk2 Gti w nitrous+turbo & even supercharged, 10 sec Quarter mile modified monster sleepers, rolling around on South African roads in everyday highway traffic, jus waiting to literally embarass you in your Sti, Gti, ST, OPC, MPS, S3...I've been there & have seen it, haha =). I hav mad respect for our beloved retro VW Golf Mk1 & we love those VW's in SA!

@GmBH: Racism is good! :) The South Africans practice it! Alas, those who they practiced it agianst now run their country... so these SA's are all coming to the UK! (since no one else would take them). Joking aside, i find them okay...
