Just under a year ago Volvo released the first images of the S60 Concept car before its debut at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. Signaling an imminent reveal, a few teaser articles filtered through recently, and finally today we have these official pictures of the luxury sedan.

"The all-new Volvo S60 is sculpted to move you," says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. "It looks and drives like no other Volvo before and the car's technology will help you to be safer and more confident behind the wheel."

One of the car's biggest selling points is called the Pedestrian Detection system which as the name implies, can detect pedestrians and apply brakes automatically should the driver fail to do so in time.

"Our aim for 2020 is that no-one should be killed or seriously injured in a Volvo," said Volvo Senior Safety Advisor Thomas Broberg previously regarding the brand's overall safety strategy.

Nothing was said about engines but it can be safely assumed that turbocharging will still play a significant role. Plug-in hybrid vehicles have also been testing.

The all-new S60 will be publically unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show followed by the start of production in the summer.

Sculpted to move you - first pictures of the all-new Volvo S60

Here are the first official pictures of the all-new Volvo S60 - sportier and more dynamic than any previous Volvo model.

"The all-new Volvo S60 is sculpted to move you. It looks and drives like no other Volvo before and the car's technology will help you to be safer and more confident behind the wheel," says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.

The Volvo S60 can be equipped with Pedestrian Detection - a groundbreaking safety feature that can detect pedestrians in front of the car and brake automatically if the driver does not react in time.

The all-new Volvo S60 is being unveiled to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in early March next year. Production of the sporty sedan model will start in early summer 2010 at the Volvo Cars plant in Ghent, Belgium.

"Customers in this segment want emotional appeal, sporty design and dynamic driving properties. The S60 has it all. We are convinced that it will be one of the strongest contenders around," says Stephen Odell.

A new S60 for the American market? That surprises me, since not long ago Volvo North America said they were going to cancel the S60. Volvo said the S60 was never in direct competition with the E-Class, 5 Series or Audi A6. Their S80 was a better model for competition, due to size, weight, features and performance.

i admire volvos, especially the recent ones. but i am very disappointing with the disjointed driving qualities like the numb wooden steering feel. i hope they sorted out that problem with the latest s60. for now i'll stick with the 3-series.

Windows are a bit too small, rear a bit short and it will be a lot heavier than before. No thanks I stay with the old model

Now, where's the R version? it deserves one...

May I suggest a high output version of the T6 engine? tune to 330hp/250kw??

Compete against less hard core sport sedan like Audi S4, or the 335i??

I think the rear end is too short and there is really nothing special. The front end is just an XC60. Earlier Volvo didn't want to be 'trendy'. Just a simple elegant design with a perfect safety and luxury stuffs. But now this isn't elegent anymore :(

actually, the s60 is meant to battle the likes of the 3-series and the a4, while the s80 is just the right size to take on the 5-series and a6, according to volvo. we must remember those cars keep on growing in each and every dimension after each generation, so... the s60, which was slotted right between the 3er and 5er, now fits perfectly in comparision with the bloated entry level bimmer.

by the way, i really like the sizd of the current s40. it is big enough to be considered a 'real' car, but is still compact, nimble and driver-firendly in urban areas. the s40 is just the right size for me - even though i have chosen the xc60 for my ride - and i think other premium automakers should start building smaller sedans this size, which is how small and light the 3-series was back when it first became a hit. give us the 1-series sedan, the a1 sedan... maybe a mb bls four door coupe... =]

This car reminds me that Volvo and Renault merger so possible some decade ago. Look at that car now - it is a Laguna but better, costs more and feels smaller...beautiful. Further: Look at my profile photos. There is a Laguna shot taken in angle close to the second pic of the S60.

Dreadful thought indeed! You need a steely determination to go for anything Geely! Yuk! Remember Rover/MG's fate under Nanjing? Exactly!
