The fallout from GM's decision to keep Opel has claimed the job of Carl-Peter Forster, the company's chief executive of European operations.

While details are limited, it appears Forster and GM management clashed over the much-mangled deal to sell Opel to a joint-venture lead by Magna International. As you may recall, GM was going to sell a 55 percent stake in Opel but later decided the company was "vital to the success of General Motors."

According to GM President and CEO Fritz Henderson, "The Opel brand has made tremendous progress under Carl-Peter's tenure and leadership over the past several years. We thank him for his significant accomplishments and wish him only the best in the future."

For the time being, Forster is expected to be replaced by Nick Reilly (GM's executive vice president of international operations). Eventually, GM's Vice Chairman, Bob Lutz, could be tapped to fill in as interim chairman of the Opel supervisory board.

Yeah, let's put Bob Lutz, the guy who was in charge of GM and dragged it through the mud in charge of GM's only functioning unit so he can bring that one down too...GOOOD IDEA! I swear these guys must want to destroy this company.

ummmm Bob Lutz has never "in charge of GM". He did a great job at Chrysler before the Daimler Benz takeover and then went to work for GM. Some of you just seem to hate anything american just because it's american and that is ridiculous. Idiots & morons live on every continent in every country. Besides at least GM allowed Forster to save face by resigning after all Forster was very public in his statements that Opel would be better off with Magna. So they cut him just like Jurgen Schremp did to Wolfgang Bernhard who was about to become CEO for Mercedes Benz for his statements. I love German cars but there is a reason why there are so many German executives playing musical chairs, they are arrogant. Company executives are supposed to keep their opinions to themselves and not make the company look bad. Blame Forster for making unprofessional statements to the media....thats why he lost his position. If you owned a company and the president of your company bad mouthed you in public to the media you would fire him also...the only one surprised was Forster. lol

it seems a very sensible decision to keep Opel- it is a very successful and well respected firm in Europe and must contribute a lot of profit to GM. I hope this will secure the jobs in england and poland that were threatened by Magna

I don't think those jobs are any safer under GM management. They cut like 15000+ jobs in their own country, to their own people. What makes you think they won't do that to europeans? The original reason they were interested in selling opel was because the unit was losing money. How do you return to profit? You cut production, cut jobs and benefits. Simple economics 101.

autoficianado - finally. Thank you. Bob Lutz came to GM and started to straighten out thier product lines. He's responsible for the Pontiac Solstice & Saturn Sky. I'm sure there is also a Opel version of this. Remember that Lutz was hired as a product guy. He's responsible for cleaning all the plastic off Pontiacs, bringing Cadillac back from the brink, getting rid of Oldsmobile (couldn't buy a good car) etc., etc., etc. Lutz gave Chyrsler their style, which lead to the Mercedes buyout. Lutz knows cars.

Due to the fact that I don't like Opel I think it's a great idea to bring Lutz :-) Let's see Opel dissapear within the next 2 years. If Lutz is in charge it'll probaly just last for 1 year. Looking forward to see a V8 6.1 Liter Opel Pick-Up-Truck soon!
