The very first spy pictures of the next-generation BMW 3 Series have been captured. BMW's bread and butter model will be launched some time in 2011 as a 2012 model. As expected of a first prototype, not everything is clear. Black and white camouflage masks every exterior detail for now but thanks to the mule spied previously we know its wheelbase has grown a bit longer. The front grille appears similar to the Z4's.

From what is known of the BMW, the 3er will attempt to keep its body mass as low as possible for better fuel consumption and performance. There is even talk of a possible hybrid model which could do well in markets like the US and Japan. Otherwise, engines will include six-cylinder petrols and diesels. Rumours also suggest a small four-cylinder petrol turbo such as a 1.6-litre.

Body styles should follow the current trend of sedan, wagon (Touring), coupe and convertible. BMW has introduced two new turbo-powered M cars in the X5 M and X6 M, and the upcoming M5 is also said to carry turbo power. Therefore a smaller-engined M3 with twin turbo technology would not surprise.

Obviously the photographers are standing right next to the car but I can´t see any interior shots! Why???

why? because this is someones job... he/she most probably took interior shots and will hold on to them for a bit and once these have created some hype, they'll sell the others!

unless WCF has just taken the same approach and is saving them for a rainy day... or should i say a day when all the SEMA crap has dried up...

hmmm! can't see a thing. Great camouflage. only the shape of the car that looks like an E46. BMW is going back in time with their designs.

It should sell well in England and anywhere else people prefer to drive phallic symbols. Also, what is this regression into undefined conservative design?

I think it's an improvement over the last 2 generations. The front end definitely doesn't look chunky.

Rumours also suggest that the 325i gets a 2.0T with 220hp and that the only six-inline will be the 335i. Just pethetic. So if you want 6 cylinders you need to spend about €55.000. Bmw s inline 6 is one, if not their best eingine ever. Like Jeremey Clarkson ones said a bmw without a big engine is like a jetfighter without a gun

"Rumors suggest" woult be the two key words my friend, it's a long way away yet. Don't get all negative until they confirm something. It's doubtful that they will replace a 230hp engine with a 220hp engine unless it has more torque at lower RPM, thus a faster car. They've not confirmed a thing, it still may be a six.
