Reports have emerged that Mercedes-Benz's performance division, AMG, is working on an SLS Black Series set to debut in 2013.

News of the super exclusive Gullwing hypercar has been kicking around for some time now, and finally some details are emerging from Mercedes sources who've spoken to Autocar about what an SLS Black Series will look like.

First off, there has got to be a performance upgrade. The SLS's standard M159 engine, a 6.2 liter V8 power plant with 563 bhp and 648 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque, will be dialed up to around 600 bhp and 677 Nm (500 lb-ft) of cranking kraft. The Black Series' 0 to 100km/h sprint is expected to fall below 3.5 seconds, from the standard SLS's 3.8. Top speed will rise to from 314 km/h (195 mph) to 335 km/h (208 mph).

AMG will achieve that power upgrade by increasing the compression ratio of the engine, creating a new profile for the camshafts and using a larger air intake manifold. But how much power can AMG continue to squeeze out of that 6.2 liter V8? Plenty.

"We're not at the limit with what's out there the moment. We're saving the best until last," says Friedrich Eichler, head of engine development at AMG.

The SLS Black Series will be a very limited one. It is expected to come with a hefty price tag of about €260,000 (£230,000).

im not sure about this, i think they are just going to decrease the value of the car with this, dont get me wrong the technology and power are going to be amazing, but i think they should make the sls to its fullest potential not make a base one and a faster one, although i get they dont want it beating their slr they should have made the slr to its fullest potential, just an opinion :)

It was quite expected that an updated version of the SLS would be produced. Mercedes-Benz is never satisfied with one Hoorah! And rightfully so. The SLS more than has pontential to be greater than it is now. I was hoping to the heavens that they'd do a Black Series of the SLS. I'm tempted to wait and get that instead..It's probably going to look astronomical or so I hope. 2013 feels painfully far...

it will probably be the 6.2L V8 engine but with supercharger (V8 Kompressor) or twin turbo (Biturbo), and I tell you first that horsepower and torque number will be higher!

600 hp and 677 NM torque is enough if the shave ~200kg off the car, put sportier suspensions, a fixed wing and bigger brakes. they held back with the SL 65 Black , but now they don't produce the SLR anymore so there is no reason to hold back with the SLS Black. until then i can't wait to see the Brabus SLS.

I've become a little tired of the SLS, to much hype. But I am looking forward to the SLS e-drive it's time to get rid of gasoline and this would be an incredible car to go green with.

i've never been sure about this model for some reason. i think Mercedes is making it's model lines too confusing. they should have named it something completely different, because naming it an SLS almost implies it's related to the SL when it isn't.

i think it's impressive that it's half the money of the SLR and still very nearly as quick. i also liked the idea of something harking back to the 300SL Gullwing, but i think all of this was somehow lost in translation and we've ended up with something that's just as confused as the SLR.

i don't know why i don't like it. on paper, i really should. but i don't!

the SLS is more SL (Sporty and Light)than the current SL generation.

scratchy, i don't dispute what you say even slightly. but irrespective of what "SL" used to mean, it has a different association now. (i would argue that the SLK is more in line with the original SL philosophy, but that's an aside.)

see if it were me, i would never have sold the van that they decided to call the "R" class, and have made this the "R" class instead. considering they would have had some idea they were going to release the SLS around the time the R Class was named, i think they should have thought it through better.

but that's a minor point. i am still not a fan of this car, for reasons even i can't explain.

I for one hope they dont make this car. The black series, is not has not ever been a user friendly car. From what Iam they have all of the comfort of sitting on a brick and the daily usualbility of Paris hilton. I think it will dilude or delude the whole intention of the SLS, Let brabus come first. they get it right

you are right , the whole point of a supercar is to be user friendly.

I'm pretty sure that due to the strides in technological advancement and the modified drivability (not to mention the attention) achieved with this car that MB wouldn't want to gamble satisfaction on the forthcoming model. They'd only want to improve upon it. Hopefully MB realizes that tarnishing the SLS' current performance figures wouldn't go over well with the public. Also, a SLS Black Series doesn't necessarily mean that It'll be a systems/performance duplicate of the SL Black.

The SLR is no more so a new SLS would have to be staggering by all accounts. I doubt MB will give Brabus a chance to outdo them on the SLS before they get a second crack at it.

Awesome, not many other words to describe it. The SL Black is the perfect niche filler for Benz. When they killed the SLR i was disappointed regardless of never being able to own one. Perfect halo car. While power is helpful, they should focus on dropping weight, the benefits of that far outweigh a bit or moderately more power. It really helps that i find this car stunningly gorgeous.
