There was no champagne on the podium, but Sebastian Vettel ensured the 2009 season got a fitting send-off with a series of doughnuts to toast his Abu Dhabi victory.

Sparkling rosewater was the order of the day on the podium, and as Mark Webber stepped back into the paddock of the Yas Marina Circuit, he reported that the liquid soaked into his Red Bull overalls hadn't tasted "too good".

Alcohol was strictly banned on the man-made Yas Island throughout the weekend, and even F1 teams' catering staff were unable to smuggle the odd bottle of wine into the circuit to use as food ingredients.

However, as BMW-Sauber staged its farewell to F1 with a Marina-side party for the entire paddock on Saturday night, it can be revealed that alcohol was not in short supply despite the wishes of the Muslim location.

Less thrilling was pole sitter Lewis Hamilton's final fling as world champion as he retired as a precaution with a brake problem, but the incoming champion Jenson Button showed his flair with a late-race stoush with Webber to the chequered flag.

F1 with a Muslim touch. Rosewater was a good workaround, I think. Keeping alcohol away is always a good thing. But the race was great. Shame about Hamilton. Red Bull got a well deserved 1-2 and Button reaped the benefit of his strong start to the season. At times I wished the Arab commentators would keep quiet and let me enjoy the engine symphony.

I think the western world should force all UAE citizens to take 6 shots of JD, smoke a cigar, get a lap dance from a russian blonde before entering the country. I mean every time there is a meeting or event down there they put all these religious regulations, if they can force the rest to abide by their customs we should be able to also, see how they like it. Like it's a little bit ridiculous when saudia arabia went to the world cup in germany they had the hotel strip all artwork and remove colourful carpeting and board up windows LOL if i was the owner i would of laughed at them and told them to get out of my hotel no matter how much $ they offered. Funny that with all that $ they are still stuck in BC times.
