U.S. Vice President Joe Biden may have accidentally revealed future plans from automotive start-up Fisker. In an address to United Auto Workers union members in Wilmington, Delaware, VP Biden spoke of a full range of vehicles coming from the company beyond the Fisker Karma.
The Vice President was quoted by Fox News as saying, "imagine when this factory, when the floor we’re standing on right now is making 100,000 plug-in hybrid sedan, coupes and crossovers every single year."
Fisker CEO Henrik Fisker laughed off the slip, but confirmed the plans to expand. “He definitely told what our product plans are," Fisker said. In an interview, Fisker told of the Fisker Niña compact sedan, which will, "have a very exciting radical design."
"We actually just showed it to the vice president of the United States of America and he said ‘it looks like a four-door Ferrari, I can’t believe it’s only going to be $40,000."
The first generation Karma will begin production next year, the Niña is scheduled for 2012 production, and the second generation Karma will launch in 2016. Although the 1st gen Karma will be built in Finland, the next version will be assembled at the Delaware plant.
Fisker is still maintaining that the Karma will be capable of 50 all-electric miles, and should have a combined fuel ecomomy of 67 mpg. Gas and electric performance ratings will be near identical.
The workers were gathered at a manufacturing facility Fisker is purchasing from General Motors. That facility was used to produce the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, and Opel GT roadsters. In the past, it had been used to build such cars as the Chevy Impala, Chevy Malibu. In its 62-year history, the plant churned out 8.5 million units.
