Both cars featured a 6.9-liter V12 engine

If you have a spare £1.1 million, you've just missed your chance to own a 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Coupe and a 2006 CLK GTR Roadster.

The rare sports cars - only 20 coupes and five roadsters were built - were sold at a recent RM Auction in London. Managing to beat earlier estimates, the coupe went for £522,500 while the roadster sold for £616,000.

Built by HWA, the GTRs were powered by a monstrous 6.9-liter V12 engine with 612 horsepower. The cars also featured a six-speed sequential manual gearbox, a dual independent double-wishbone suspension, and carbon-fiber brakes.

Other notable sales at the auction included a "1950 Aston Martin DB2 Team Car with Le Mans and Mille Miglia provenance" for £550,000, a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Landaulet for £308,000, and a 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Stelvio for £440,000.

NEW WORLD AUCTION RECORD SET FOR AN ASTON MARTIN DB2 AT RM'S ‘AUTOMOBILES OF LONDON'

  • Offered for the first time in 52 years, a 1950 Aston Martin DB2 Team Car sets new auction record at £550,000
  • Other highlights - two rare Mercedes-Benz CLK GTRs sell for a combined £1.1 million; an unrestored 1969 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Landaulet achieves over five-times pre-sale estimate
  • The esteemed Edgar Schermerhorn collection of motor cars and automobilia brings £1.5 million

LONDON, England (29 October 2009) - Preeminent international auction house, RM Auctions, concluded its 2009 auction season on a high note in London last night, posting £10.9 million in total sales with a strong 87% of all lots sold at the third-annual ‘Automobiles of London' event.

Held in association with Sotheby's, the single-day auction presented some 84 motor cars, consigned from 11 countries around the world, and 40 lots of automobilia, attracting strong international interest from bidders in the room, on the phone and over the internet.

A 1950 Aston Martin DB2 Team Car ‘VMF 64'with Le Mans and Mille Miglia provenance, offered for the first time in 52 years, set a new auction world record for an Aston Martin DB2, achieving £550,000, whilst 13 lots exceeded their original high estimates. Most notably, an original 1969 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Landaulet surpassed its pre-sale high estimate of £60,000 to achieve the remarkable sum of £308,000.

"This sale wraps up another fantastic year for RM globally," said Max Girardo, Managing Director, RM Europe.

"We're proud of our reputation for consistently achieving record prices and offering the finest motor cars available to the market, and today's results were certainly no exception. With an 87% sell-through rate and numerous lots exceeding their estimates, it's fair to say that the collector car market is still remarkably strong," added Girardo.

The top sale of the evening was a 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster, the only right-hand drive example built, achieving £616,000, followed closely by a 2005 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Coupe selling for £522,500.

The event also presented a fine selection of memorabilia and coachbuilt motor cars from the private collection of Mr. Edgar Schermerhorn. Headlined by a 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Stelvio for £440,000, the collection achieved a total £1.5 million.

RM Auctions will kick off 2010 with its return to the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa for the 11th annual ‘Automobiles of Arizona' event on 21st - 22nd January, including an exclusive, British-flavored evening auction. RM Auctions' next European event, the recently-announced ‘Sporting Classics of Monaco', will take place 1st May 2010 at the Grimaldi Forum.

Official results from the ‘Automobiles of London'event will be posted online at www.rmauctions.com.

I think you may be wrong concerning the production years of the CLK GTR since the race version used to race in GT1 in the second mid-90's. But what an impressive (and flying sometimes - in the case of the CLR V8) car!

This has got to be the most bespoke Mercedes-Benz car ever made - a definite future classic. Well you could always ask Horatio Pagani to build you a Zonda with V12 AMG.

My friend owns two of those. ironically it has a metal plate that says 'one of 80' plague in both cars. i will be more than happy to settle for the clk63 black series. it is stupid of mercedes to kill off their clk badge.

How is that ironic? This is a CLK GTR, not a CLK DTM AMG.

They're MUCH much slower than the CLK-GTR. The CLK-GTR is still easily the fastest Mercedes Benz ever built and im not even talking about the 750hp super sports.

you're right carbonfibreguy, it's a beast and the Gumpert too. Both of them are cool. But they're both ugly as hell. With this one I would drive without the body because at least the engine looks great. Xanavi: so people who don't share your view of what is ugly and what not are crazy? How old are you?

Not really, i was kidding. Im one of the firmest believers in beauty being in the eye of the beholder. Im just surprised that anybody could find such a gorgeous and traditionally styled Benz supercar ugly given how strong a word "Ugly" is. Im 25, you?
