Porsche Norway detunes the Boxster and Cayman for reduced import taxation
2009 Porsche Boxster Cayman price list in Norway

Saves $15,600 to $18,819

Norwegian imported for Porsche cars, Autozentrum Sport AS, has decided to decrease the output of the Boxster and Cayman, in exchange for reduced import taxation.

According to BilNorge, the entry-level Boxster will only produce 211 hp instead of 255 hp. Likewise, the Cayman will also be detuned to 211 hp (down from 265 hp).

While this sounds tragic, there is a logical explanation behind it. Norwegian import taxes are partially based on a car's horsepower and CO2 emission ratings. With the reduced output, the Boxster receives a stunning 88,000 Norwegian crown ($15,621 USD / €10,524) cut while the Cayman costs 106,000 crowns ($18,819 USD / €12,677) less.

Oddly enough, Porsche is claiming the weakened cars are just as fast as the usual models. A manually equipped Norwegian Boxster can run from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the Cayman can do the same task in 5.8 seconds (cars equipped with the PDK transmission are 0.1 seconds faster). The company also says the top speed remains unchanged (263 km/h for the Boxster, 265 km/h for the Cayman).

So what's crazier, the performance hating Norwegian import taxes or Porsche's claim that 44-54 hp can magically disappear with no ill effects?

Impossible to have same time with 50-60 without weight reduction. And if the car is slower on the highway and will be much slower as time goes by. I would just TUNE IT BACK later on who would know anyways.

may be different final drive ratio?

No it is not different. How many times does anyone ever use the last 50 horses anyways. minor modification to drive train can make it happen.

There is no way it can do 5.9" for the 0-100km/h with 211hp/290Nm and 1335kg. It's just marketing lies. Few people will care though - they will like the discount more.

The cars will probably have the same power output if set up on a dyno. Underrated = cheaper. If that's not the case and they really are down to 211 hp, they won't deliver that acceleration.

Exactly, a quick "reflash" of the ECU and all those missing ponies are back. Can be done quite cheaply too!

Please show us the torque graph... the truth is in it... Power figure does not mean much nowadays !!!

Incidently, the figures for the base version Boxster and Cayman haven't changed (must be a typo) but the 'S' versions are 3/4 of a second slower!

i agree with p2c, sure you can have 1000hp and go 0-60 in 3.9 but if perfectly tune with 400-500- hp you go 0-60 in 3.5sec.

In Belgium Porsche is already offering these kinds of detuned versions for some time. Not only Porsche, also BMW, Volkswagen, ... For Porsche it started with the Boxster as soon as it went over 211hp and the Cayman followed. I actually drove a standard and detuned version of the 228hp Boxster, have to say difficult to tell the difference without stopwatch and not being a seasoned sportcar driver. But currently difference is becoming very big, surely one must feel that?
