A one-off BMW M5 CSL was unveiled at the company's Nurburgring workshop. The prototype is a unique M Division example that forms part of the M5 brand's 25th anniversary celebrations.

The big news is the engine which was modified from the factory 5.0-litre V10 to a larger 5.5-litres via increased stroke, making it M Division's largest ever. Modifications include a carbon fibre manifold with an increased capacity air box and secondary oil cooler. As a result another air duct was created on the front bumper to accommodate it.

One way to qualify as a CSL (Coupe Sport Lightweight) is to shed body mass, which this one did. A carbon fibre roof was employed and some interior parts stripped down. For example standard front seats were replaced with carbon fibre units and the rear one removed completely. A total weight saving of 50kg was achieved. The suspension was also slightly modified but kept close to standard.

Long-time BMW race driver Claudia Huertgen has taken the car around the ‘Ring and claims to have posted a sub-8 minute time.

Official figures were not released but M division's head of development, Albert Biermann told Autocar that something around 580bhp (433kW) and 400 lb-ft (542Nm) could be expected. It is sent to the rear wheels via the double clutch M-DCT 7-speed gearbox. The power figure sounds close to what is speculated for the next-generation car.

"Right now we're concentrating on the next-generation M5," Biermann said. "This car has been fun to develop but there are no plans for production."

If the new M5 comes out of production making those figures well..... Well I guess I know what I'll be striving for!! 588 is good for this car.

i'm almost sure it will be a turbo V8 with less Hp than this , but a lot more torque.

Oh yeah..... They did mentioned something about downsizing their power plants in the M division vehicles, the M5 in particular, right?

To shed 50 kgs is not too impressive on an M5...

it's not bad when you consider it's now got a bigger engine.

Actually the engine would weigh less as there would be shorter connecting rods. 50kg is pretty sad though considering they removed the rear bench, i mean rather have the extra weight and a bench, otherwise what;s the point of a 4 door sedan with 2 seats? Also, 5,5L is not M's biggest engine, the one used in the McLaren F1 is, it was also featured in an X5 concept which was a 6L V12.

point taken, but bear in mind this is a one off design study, and although i think it's likely BMW will steal some ideas from this to create a run-out M5, most of it probably won't see production in this model generation. therefore the fact that it's lost its rear bench is kind of irrelevant...

the M3 CSL had thin glasses, light trunk floor, CF trunk, light exhaust, racing seats, no A/c, or audio system, racing-like ECU and intake system, and the list go a bit more...THIS EXECUTIVE TANK IS NOT A CSL!

Video would be nice to hear some of the engine whether it's very different from normal M5.

engine would actually be better for the production car with its longer stroke

sure that they put the new DSG gearbox in there and didn't use the M5's standard SMG?

BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. is this the only thing ///M Division can come up with for their 25th anniversary? i would expect a REAL tribute to the ///M1.

big fan of bmw and M cars especially the e46 m3 csl however i dont find e60 m5 being csl'd up necessary. Its actually a waste. Save 50kg over a roof isnt going to make a big difference on the handling of this car since it weighs more than 1650kg. CSL has always been named on 2 door M cars on BMW cars. Thats why we will never see an e60 M5 CSL :)

For a M5's price, I really expect a lot more torque...say somewhere around 550.

Its all about HP man. The engine is really high revving. Think S2000 that only makes 160 torque with 240hp.

I beg to differ. You can have all the horsepower you want but if you don't have sufficient torque to back it up, it's a waste. The S2000 is a relatively light car which negates the substantial difference in HP & Torque.

Why no M3 CSL? Why BMW? Why?

M3 CSL will be so expensive as it will cost near to current M5, then people will choose buying a M5 as it is more comfortable and not far slower than M3 CSL. However, M5 is the highest range of M cars, thus a project to make it into CSL version is making sense as its sibling M6 will make a lot of more senses. Just expecting SL Black Series against M6 CSL and M5 CSL opens a new chapter of super saloon. Perhaps BMW is thinking how to make us happy after some of their new cars are more purposed to satisfy new customers in the other rest of world.

Lotus 2Eleven costs more than the Exige S. A 911 GT3 RS costs more than RS. Mind you, a Ferrari 430 Scuderia costs the same as the 599 GTB. I am sure BMW purists or petrolhead would purchase it not just for collectors but for trackday too. It does wonders like how the M3 CSL did to the E46 3-Series like how this M5 5.5 V10 does to the E60 5-Series.

There's something not right with a four door car with two seats. Or is it a coupe also

we already have 5 series coupe, it it called as 6 series.

Some of our reliable sources say an M3 CSL is not entirely out of the realm of possibilities, provided: there is sufficient customer demand and it will make money.

I don't see the next M5 beat this one. Don't care even if it has more power
