Evo magazine is reporting the newly facelifted 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS has unofficially lapped Nurburgring Nordschleife in 7min 33sec. That's still significantly slower than the current leaders, which include the Corvette ZR1 (7m26.4s), Gumpert Apollo (7m11.57s), Radical SR8LM (6m48s) and the highly disputed Nissan GT-R (7m27.56s), however, compared to the regular 911 GT3 it is a full seven seconds quicker.

The test driver was not named, however, track conditions were reported as having "some light traffic" and the timer telemetry showed a theoretical best lap of 7m 30s.

It was a year ago Porsche disputed Nissan's claims of achieving 7m 29s with the newly launched Nissan GT-R which was 20 kilos heavier than the 911 Turbo. Porsche officials were baffled as they could only achieve 7m 54s with a GT-R they purchased from the US. Porsche suspected the GT-R had been modified or used other tires. Nissan fired back by releasing photos of the tires used as well as in-car video footage with timer display. Since then Nissan has gone on to better the GT-R's time further with 7m 26.7s.

Why wasn't the Viper ACR referenced? This is the second article I read this week regarding Ring times in which it was omitted. Yes, the Apollo owns the current record, but the ACR was faster than all the other cars listed except for the Radical.

What do you mean the ACR isn't a factory car? It's not any different than the GT3RS. It's a track-version of the Viper that can be bought at any Dodge dealership.

Jerry, the ACR can be BOUGHT at the dealership and all of its components can be retro-fitted to previously purchased SRT-10s. No disrespect budd, but it is a factory car and NOT a "Tuner" car.

I dont know about respect Jerry, maybe its that, its neglect for sure. In Magazine comparisons the SRT-10 base or ACR is often left out, almost like magazines are afraid to show the unbiased results.

In order for these Ring arms races to be fair, they need to get a tame, UN-biased racing driver like the Stig, so there's no doubt it's just the machine's abilities rather than drivers' skill in making the times.

Well, the Gumpert time should be dropped, since they used semi-slicks, whereas Nissan, Corvette and Radical did use "normal" sport tires.

Lap times are there just to show the car's ability to around the 147 corners and the speed. I think it is fair to compare the all-wheel drive 911 Turbo against the Nissan GT-R. As much as I love the Godzilla, the 911 GT3 RS remains the ultimate track car with all the right ingredients that makes it special and it is also the car that you would actually buy.

Wait! How can posting the lap video on Youtube prove that they did not field a stock spec car for the lap?

I think the only way to settle this is for an independent test with cars straight off a dealer lot...driven by the Stig.

*Although Bruno Senna did prove the GTR was faster on a different track in Fifth Gear...

i mean in the top gear track it went around the track barely .2 seconds slower than a gt2 and just as fast as the scuderia... it's hard to doubt that... but anything that's unbelievable is subject to questioning naturally

Also the GT-R does race in the Japanese Le Mans series i think the post above eludes to that, not only Super GT. Also it wouldn't surprise me if the GT-R qualifies(not meaning time trial wise) for Le Mans and makes an appearance.

the GT-R doesn't race because it has all wheel drive and turbos. the GT-R GT1 has nothing in common with the stock GR-R , it is RWD and has a NA V8 engine.

Yeah its good, i prefer the gt3 rs over the standard gt3, wish they would bring out a gt2 update but i heard they wont be until the new model of 998

they made a turbo S and a GT2 update for the 996, maybe they will make the same for the 997. they already stopped production of the 997 GT2 when the GT3 RS was launched.

when speaking of dollars and sense. I'd like to see a Z-Tune version of the GTR making close to the 650whp mark. as in the limited edition R34 models Nissan produced in 2005. The price point will be closer to the GT3rs. I think the picture will be clearer then.

Very impressive, as i don't believe some of the times of its competition, like the GT-R for one. The GT3 is IMO, probably the greatest track car, one of the best on the market period.

Ideally i'ld own a GT3RS and an SRT-10, among a couple others.

yeah. that's what nissan wants to do, lie to the world after almost 9 years and millions of dollars worth of development on the gtr. sounds like a bunch of cry babies to me. pls pass the $100 kleenex box and tell me it's going to be alright.

I love the new GT-R, its one of the cars in my would-be dream garage, i just don't believe their times. Im sure it can do better than 7:54 which is very impressive for a 500+hp car(factory power is false) that weighs 3800lbs.

It has nothing to do with cry babies on my end, i just dont believe everything i read or in this case see.

However I don't recall nissan crying foul re the GT3 RS' latest and best result on the ring. also remember, nobody remembers the guy that finishes second best. oh, good lord, i've just dropped my $15 starbucks coffee. better get another delivered quickly before someone sees me without it.

Thats true, everyone knows Nissan used the 997Turbo as their bench test mark just as Chevy used the F430(base) as the benchmark tester against their current Z06(GM just sold their GM Heritage NART blue F430 on Barret). So Nissan might have had a chance to make the same slam but didn't.

I think Porsche should have just did the same test but report their findings only to Nissan, unless Nissan would totally dismiss them. Rather than going straight to the media.

oh, almost forgot. the hand build gtr motors vary in hp. some by a fair margin. read somewhere that a jspec car actually makes 493 whp on the dyno. for all you clever know it alls out there. as well, the new attessa ets awd system is far more advanced on the new gtr which incorporates a rear active steer to cut cornering times immensely. seems to me porsche is interested in dispelling the myth re the gtr to protect their lucrative bottom line. If this is true, wouldn't you feel this was dispicable and a show of POOR sportsmanship? IF you truly don't believe that Nissan (Prince Motor Corp) cannot produce a truly world class sports car, that's fine. The race car drivers who use 911's in GT500 racing that have never really been a threat against the R34's and the new GTR's will tell you different I'm sure.

I think the GT-R is a great car, well worth the money. Is it as magical as Nissan claims it is? I don't think so. First of all the Japanese are very meticulous in their manufacturing and pioneers of quality control. They would never let an engine that has been engineered to produce a certain amount of power be out of spec by a margin of +-10%. Why? Be it more power or less something is wrong. Either the boost is too high, compression is too high, something is out of engineering specs and that engine would never make it out of the factory. As to your comment about poor sportsmanship, it would be poor sportsmanship if they straight out called them liars without any basis, but in this case they merely stated that they had some doubts about the integrity of Nissan's claims based on their own test results with a GT-R. Point is does anyone buy a car simply for one purpose? To drive it around the ring? No, most people that buy any of these cars never go near the ring, perhaps never even in germany so to attach so much meaning and argue about these lap times is pointless. For all we know porsche could be right as nobody yet has been able to get within 10s of Nissan's time with their stock cars, perhaps their car was the equivalent of an Engineering Sample CPU that Intel and AMD give out to benchmarkers which always are of higher grade and will overclock higher than the consumer product. Or maybe Nissan's driver is truly amazing, in which case the car cannot take much of the credit as nobody else has been able to get close to the same time. In either case its a moot point.

excellent editorial radmeister. and your point would be valid if there wasn't a video of the GTR's record lap. i think that there is transparency that is clearly present here along with unbiased officials who were present at the time of the hot lap - thus the announcement recognizing this time as a world record. and you're right about the fact that only a handful of people out there have driven around the ring and that most people would buy a car based on real time world driving. In terms of the whp differential, i believe that the horsepower rating on the GTR is grossly understated - see R34 Vspec RB26DETT's mftr 291 hp rating vs 330 hp at the wheel when dyno'd. Kind of like the BMW 335i which definitely makes more than 300hp at the crank. Mr Radmeister, you almost had me convinced. However, I do applaud your literary skills. Bravo.

you should know at your age that a video doesn't prove anything, you can't see if that car was stock or not from that video. also there weren't any "officials" there , all 'Ring times are unofficial, there isn't any group like FIA or something similar to check the cars and make measurements.

also many magazines have reached Porsche's claimed times with the 911 models and sometimes even got better times than the ones posted by Porsche, but no driver can get close to Suzuki (who wasn't such a great driver in F1 anyway). how do you explain that ?

i'll explain it to you scratchy... the guys that drive the gtr unconsciously drive it to less than its full potential because they're afraid of the truth... it's a theory... i say this because in other tracks the gtr has clearly beaten every porsche, except for the gt2 and by a small margin

Just thinking outside the box.

As you will see on this video the gtr has varied amounts of hp because of the uniqueness of each engine... the true "white lie" is on the torque figures which seem to be greatly understated.

Just wanna clear any dilusions out there. I do think Porsche is a fine company (even with the archaic RR beetle layout). There is no doubt that Porsche represents a special pedigree in the performance exotic world. And I would consider it an honour to have one on my driveway. If it wasn't for Porsche's incredible achievements as a world automaker, I doubt that Nissan would've continued to produce the GTR. Final post.
