Entry Level BMW 5-Series GT Possible, but no 5er GT M

2010 BMW 5-Series GT

Four-cylinder engines to join the lineup?

According to a recent report, BMW will not produce a high performance 5-Series GT M.

While not totally unexpected, considering the Z4 M was also nixed, it does seem odd that BMW has approved M versions of the X5 and X6. If the report is correct, the range-topping 5-Series GT will be the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 550i with 400 horsepower.

With performance out, efficiency is in. According to 5-Series GT product manager, Michelle Roberts, "We are looking at the twin-turbo diesel and are likely to see that soon. Nothing is confirmed yet, but a four-cylinder diesel is also being looked into." Autocar believes this indicates an entry-level 520d GT, with the 175 bhp four-cylinder diesel engine from the 320d. If this is the case, the 520d GT would be cheap (relative to the other 5-Series GTs) and fuel efficient (it would likely average 50+ mpg in the combined cycle).

A twin turbo V8 makes up for that ugly rear end.

no 5er GT M?

pity..

The potential market for a high-riding car which felt and looked like a saloon, but was incredibly fast would have been great, im sure.

I'm just not feeling this car. I have tried, but the more I look at it, the more I'm in shock that BMW didn't test this as a concept first, to get reaction before being so stupid to produce a totally new vehicle without considering public interest...that so American like._

I just drove 530d GT a couple of days ago. Looks massive on the outside, but drives pretty much like a regular 5-series, and that's a good thing. And the interior is a lot nicer than in the 7-series.

whatever.. im glad it doesent get an M. it doesent diserve it. it shouldnt exist, it's so ugly. a good and powerful engine would be a waste of money and resources....and of course, time. hope the next gen 5er would be, as the passed article said "most beautiful 5 series ever". bmw have to make it up somehow...

This car only get problem with its both bumpers, they look too soft in term of weird. However, actually its tailgate, headlight and rear lamp are quite nice. I also believe good interior is better than good exterior as I will spend my time in and not out when driving. The current E60 is very good looking but it is a little bit pity inside and it needs more combination of alumunium & woods to justify some plastics near to driver.

What 2 l diesel with only 175 HP/ 130 Kw for nearly two tonne car? Then it will reach 100km/h above 10s, it will not be a proper BMW. Please remove the AWD system, it just weights the car, more fuel and more services. If it will be a entry level, please don't spec down some material or make some options are unavailable. Because actually 2 l twin-turbo diesel 200hp/147 Kw is really enough to pull it if this car can take diet program to around 1700s kg. Furthermore, I also really love the concept of tailgate and higher ground clearance, good for people who live in developing countries like Indonesia.

Who would be so stupid to actually think they would make an M version of this car. An M is not just taking a powerful engine they have pre-built and drop it into any car. Lots of tuning to the whole care is done before an M is actually released. The new M3 was driven 600,000 miles on nurgburgring alone to just tune the suspension to the most perfect setting. Only reason they made the X5 and X6 M is because there is no competition for them now. Cayenne Turbo is is priced at 150k and still gets destroyed by the X5M that cost about 85k.
