At the 2009 Vienna Engine Symposium Volkswagen presented some new compact engines. One of them was the 1.2-litre TSI producing 77kW (105hp) and maximum torque of 175Nm made from 1,500rpm. The unit is now available for order in the Polo, Golf and Golf Plus. Rumours say even the upcoming Audi A1 will use it. If that is the case expect it to appear in Skoda and Seat products too.

The 1.2 TSI is based on lightweight aluminium construction and some technologies employed include direct injection and a turbocharger. It offers smoother power delivery, lower fuel consumption and low emissions.

VW's 1.4 TSI has won the "Engine of the Year" award (1-litre to 1.4-litre category) three years in a row since 2006 and hopes to emulate that with the new addition.

New 1.2 TSI engine is now available to order for the Polo, Golf and Golf Plus

Small, strong and fast

Wolfsburg, 22 October 2009 - A new engine, the 1.2l TSI, is getting ready to follow the success of its predecessor. The 77 kW / 105 PS strong engine is now available for the Polo, Golf and Golf Plus and rounds off the successful family of TSI engines.

Highly efficient and at the same time low in emissions: Volkswagen wrote a new chapter in the history of petrol engines with the introduction of the TSI engines, which have caused quite a stir over the last few years. Volkswagen presented the next engine in the family, the 1.2 TSI, at this year's Vienna Engine Symposium. With this new engine, Volkswagen continues this intelligent downsizing and transfers new forward-looking TSI technology to even smaller displacements. The new engine is now available to order for the Polo, Golf and Golf Plus.

In order for the 1.2l TSI to be convincing in terms of performance, torque and torque curve despite the small displacement, the petrol direct injection engine is equipped with a turbocharger. Therefore, the maximum torque of 175 Newton metres is already available at an engine speed of 1,500 rpm.

The continued development of the engine technology of the small but powerful engine family consistently uses friction optimisation and lightweight construction. The engine is not only based on an aluminium crankcase. In addition, the completely re-tuned direct injection provides smooth power development, low consumption and low emissions. These features have already been rewarded in the "big brother" of the family, the 1.4l TSI, which has been awarded the prestigious "Engine of the Year" award three years in a row since 2006.

3 or 4-Cylinders? This unit is not the twin turbo and supercharged engine like the 1.4 TSI but a small TFSI? The 2.0 engine found in the new GTI is called the TSI but only feature a turbo in it. Get your stuffs right VW.

How you came about with that equation jetcraz??? I thought the designation of "TSI" was that to categorised VW cars that were equipped with a turbo stratified injection system (TSI). TURBO non-the-less, not nesscearly "twin charged" as you've stated.

TSIs are the ones that have both super- and turbochargers. TFSI is just turbo.

I've inquired with VW personally, TSi is just turbo charged. It's definitely not twin turbo.

Don't think so. The GTI is has a 'TSI' designation and has a single turbo only.

This 1.2 TSi engine is already in the new Skoda Yeti. In the UK we're on extended delivery times for the 1.4tsi 122bhp, 6 months+ on some models.

Not all tsi's have both a turbo and a supercharger, but all tsi's use forced induction. The low power 1.4 tsi for example only uses a single turbo. So tootall is right.

I thought TSI meant direct injection and was not related to turbos or superchargers.

i think the FSI is the NA one.

I had read some where stating tsi are twin charge as in china's passat 1.8 tsi/2.0 tsi

Guys, if you doubt what TSI means... just Google it : http://www.volkswagen.com.au/vwcms/master_public/virtualmaster/en_au/company/Innovative_Technology/tsi/start.html, It can be both twin or single charged.

...and there are both in VW Golf already. One is 122 bHP and second with supercharger 150bHP. Both are 1.4 liter four-pots.

Regardless of the engines, I like the styling direction.

175 Nm torque is not bad from 1,2 liter engine after all. VW doing great job despite the fact that majority prefer 475 Nm torque out from their cars.

I read the only new MK6 Golf's released to the States (other than the GTI) will be a 2.5 litre petrol and 2.0 litre diesel. If so, bad news: shitty for the environment and completely unnecessary when small, direct injection, forced induction-based engines are doing good things. I do hope for change in people's atttitude in the US towards small engines, expecially when the Golf is a small car (but then a 2.5 litre might seems small!).
