A couple of BMW executives have described the upcoming BMW 5 Series to WCF as probably the most beautiful BMW of our time. More and more the black and white psychedelic camo is being set aside so its' only a matter of time before these subjective claims are proven or shattered. These latest spy pictures show the car with an undisguised front grille, fog lights and new aluminium wheels. The headlights, wavy bonnet lines and taillights show clear relations with both the 3 and the 7 Series.

When the Fiver goes on sale in 2010 it will set the tone for a number of new BMW engines. Yes there will be the usual 3.0-litre straight six types, both petrol and diesel. And yes the 300kW (408hp) 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 is a definite for the 550i at least. But the bottom end should be most interesting because of rumours about new four-cylinder petrol turbo engines coming to the fore. The new ActiveHybrid system used in the X6 and 7 Series may also be installed in the 5.

As is normally the case expect to see Touring (wagon) and xDrive AWD models in the lineup.

Not much is known about the interior but it's safe to say an evolution of the 7er and the 5 Series GT would be an accurate picture. That means the stylish plastic gear knob found in automatic transmissions and the updated iDrive system will be included.

It does look a lot like the 7. Say what you want about Bangle, but you could tell the difference between every Series.

that truck does look good. the camouflaged BMW on the other hand doesn't look promising.

Beautiful truck! I can't say the same for the camo'd bimmer though. I thought the M5 spyshots looked great but this doesn't really do anything for me. I think it might be the head lamps, they lookk different form the 5er GT. The latter has inward slanting lights, giving it a more agressive look; that might be what the sedan is lacking. At this point I'd take the new E.

I never thought I would see the day when HUYNDAI's new stylying would look better than BMW. What a sad day.

to be honest, Hyundai just copies good looking cars. while BMWs are ugly they are at least original.

Beautiful lines, nice side profile. At the moment it seems that BMW has been playing safe with the front. Difficult to say since it's still quite heavily camouflaged.

I am waiting for this car to show itself, what we see now doesnt show that it's going to be the best looking BMW of all time. I know the car is half seen, however if it stays like this then the new Mercedes-Benz E-class doesnt need to worry because both cars are going to be on the same level, from the design point of view. But again i really cant wait to see the final product! I hope the picture's are released soon like how the new E-class picture's were leaked.

Does anyone know who designed this new F10 2011 BMW 5-Series? Was it Chris Bangle?

Bangle has retired. New chief of design is Adrian van Hooydonk, who's responsible for this car.

The final design was approved over 3 years ago when Bangle was still at the helm. He would have rubber- stamped it, along with the BMW AG board.

i like it, proportion is similar to today's E60 with a hint of the lovable E39 smooth lines and that borad E38 grille. love it! guess the interior is similar to the 5 Gran Turismo coupled to that fantastic powerplants. i can't wait!

Classic design. Very nice !!! The E-class is compared to this an old men car...@slashers: for years you criticize the Bangle design and call for a conservative line. Now its here and you are bashing again..can´t follow.

WOW! Nice Truck!

How could this be the most beautiful BMW? Looks like a conservative type design like the E39. I still say the E34 is the best looking 5 series of all time.

At least it looks better than the piece of shite from behind... Probably the best looking BMW for the recent years, but this is far from beautiful.

The Maserati Quattroporte is beautiful. The Aston Martin Rapide is beautiful. Even the A5 is quite attractive...but this...beautiful...no...

Why would you list 4 door vehicles and then throw in a 2 door? Makes no sense.

maybe he's talking about the A5 Sportback ?

To me, 'beautiful' and 'BMW' haven't gone together since the Z8. Seeing that this is following in the footsteps of the F02 and the GT, I certainly have my doubts about this being the 'most beautiful BMW of our time'.

It's not better or worse looking, but I don't think the 5 serie GT has fantastic powerplants, I'm just not a fan of turbo's. And looking to that 5 GT this car is going to get a lot heavier. A 520i sedan weighs 1465 kg, a 550i sedan 1635, than look at a jaguar xf 5.0v8 is 145 kg more and E500 is evem 195 kg more.

Seems to be an improvement over the previous one. Not bad. Bit like a 4-door 5-Series GT!

Though not avantgarde as the current 5 series, the F 10 version is clean and looks more grown up, which is a good thing. Good, that there's a bit of the 7 series mixed in there. It'll be a success.

Beautiful!.. Just beautiful how they keep the traditional look of the car unlike audi and Mercedes. Current 5 series which is 6 years old is still holding the crown of it's class. looks like BMW already secured the crown again.

looks like a facelifted e39... not sure how i feel about it yet, but i agree with bone91... the e34 is the most beautiful 5series to date

it is so funny how whenever there is info on the BMW's then everyone comments and all the BMW haters and Mercedes fans have to comment!

It's funny how a lot of people are mention E39, cause I am feeling that too. Like what I see so far, just hope they dont ruin it with a funky rear. This is what the E60 should have been.

So far im liking it, the grill like its a normal size, it looks normally shaped (for a BMW) this car might be good. and yes, the E39 is the best looking BMW ever (IMO)with the E38 comming in for a CLOSE second. on a side note the 5 GT dsnt look so terrible in this picture.

...something to add, I dnt think Bimmers shuld look "beatiful" in the same way Astons and such look. They should look classic and clean, (double round head lights, rectangle shaped body, the BMW grill...) pssbly even a little bit uhm..."boring"?. to me the(US) BMW line for the year 1998 are the most... uhm... BMWlike BMWs.

I love the original E60 design, and from the photos attached here. I think that it would be a very nice and smooth transition from original design, and blend it with the new BMW design que. I can't wait to see it!

the front looks cute...not something you wanna say when you're talking about a bmw, which tend to be mean looking sportier cars.

Actually E60 look awesome if you are Asian as it got progressive design which appeals to us. However, in Europe and USA, classy and elegance style with business like design will be more appreciated as a BMW icon. However, as most people know, more and more car manufactures put their efforts to attract consumer with radical design. Nevertheless, BMW path also seems to be nice as long as other are following what BMW did recently, then BMW turns again their direction so this brand will get distinguish look as modern classy. On the other hand, as an E60 owner, at the first time I hope BMW will take another quantum leap as Bangle did fantastically to current 5-series, but this successor is also pretty except its front bumper with is better to be replaced with those put on Z4.

Jaguar's XF is so much nicer than this.

peterjames7
October 23, 2009 5:59 AM
yeah i agree, the xf is alot nicer, but this looks like a very safe design for bmw. i knew van hoydonk wasnt goin to have much influence on this model as bangle signed it off, the next 3 will be his first bmw. which i hope is goin to be a great car, current bmws have lost their sporty style, i hope van hoydonkl goes back to something in that style
