A glorious tribute to the Porsche pedigree

Porsche has unveiled a new commercial to help promote the launch of the highly controversial Panamera hatchback.

While we're still not convinced the Panamera is a thing of beauty, the commercial is simply amazing. The CGI animation features a glorious glimpse of virtually every single Porsche ever created. However, the message Porsche is trying to convey is that the Panamera occupies a new branch on the Porsche family tree, a "true sports car for four."

As we have previously reported, the Panamera S/4S features a naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V8 engine that produces 400 bhp and 500 Nm of torque. The range-topping Panamera Turbo boasts a twin-turbo 4.8-liter V8 that turns out 500 bhp and 700 Nm torque. It accelerates from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 188 mph.

With the Panamera it's as if Porsche is trying to force themselves into the niche market of fast 4 doors. Good for them, but that's a tall order to fill. BMW and Mercedes has controlled this market successfully and with Audi finally being able to compete and produce cars comparable to the others, the Panamera needs to be brilliant.

Mercedes has the CLS and Audi has the A5 Sportback , what does BMW have in that segment ?

he said "4 doors," i don't think he was limiting himself to 4-door coupes. anyway, that panamera is a real eye sore in that commercial.

Xenicide was referring to 'fast four doors', not 'four door coupe wannabes'. BMW certainly has made a statement with the M5, a worthy competitor to the Panamera.

2010S5 - i disagree. The Panamera is more of a competitor for the 760i or an S65 AMG. just look up the prices and the size of her to spo that CLS and S5 Sportback or M5 are just not its league. it's the lowest and widest 4-door saloon around, but other dimensions (length!) are absolutely full-sized.

Panamera S competes with Maserati Quattroporte, while Turbo would tackle the Aston Rapide. I don't count Estoque because it's practically in the same company ;) i think it's a good competitor of Ferrari 612 too.

Bentley Continental Flying Spur is another example of inside-company "competitors", but im sure VW will figure something out.

I don't like that all new Porsches now look like the 911 or sort of a spin off the 911. The Cayenne, Boxter, Panamera. All have same face/profile/rear of the 911 in one way or another. Had designers of Porsche 40 years ago or more decided to make a 4-door sedan they would have been more innovative. Look at the 928, 914, 944, 968. The current crop of designers/execs in the company are too shallow and bad imitators too.

the designers had nothing to do with it , it was Wiedeking's call.

i love modern Porsche's organic designs. they needn't be changed, just facelifted.

Somehow I hope he takes all your money first. He can't have any of mine since I'm not american. Also in the words of the late great George Carlin " The planet ain't dyin', we are! Maybe nature invented humans so it can have plastic and once we've made enough it will shake us humans off like a bad case of flees."
