It's all speculation at the moment. None of the involved parties have ever released an official statement regarding any changes to current partnerships and contracts.

From my understanding, McLaren is trying to buy the BMW-Sauber engine plant so they can produce their own. But yeah, nothing has been made official.

You're wrong on the Lotus connection to BMW Sauber. The former are going alone bankrolled by Malaysian money, whereas the latter have sold out to a bunch of Arabs.

BMW sells everything, if McLaren buys the BMW engine plant , it won't be BMW anymore, it will be a McLaren engine which would make sense since their road cars will have McLaren engines.

Why is that?
BMW F1 engines aren't like their road going cars, their not exactly winning awards for it.
The engine to have atm is the MB ones, followed by Ferrari.
Not being a dick or anything. Just my opinion.

+1 @ Shawnex. The MB engine has been reliable as hell and is undoubtedly the most powerful in the field. I actually hope MB goes it alone and fields their own independent team. At least that way they wouldn't be able to blame McLaren for a poorly designed car. Going it alone probably doesn't make much sense financially but with their engine technology and development of KERs, I think it would be interesting to see them on their own.

atm BMW F1 engines may not be the best , but BMW F1 engines have won awards and championships.

i agree with andreas350z for one simple reason.
remember what happened the last time mclaren took a bmw engine? it was gold platet und put into one of the most amazing cars ever. a partership in formula 1 gets my hopes up concerning the f1 successor :)

shawnex is right - and imagine a ferrari powered mclaren... that would be weird

Perhaps Volkswagen could power McLaren? It was alleged they wanted to join F1, but needed backers not that long ago.

hope Mclaren-Bmw will make bmw build a new engine for the new mclaren f1 ;)

1) McLaren-BMW may never exist.
2) There is no new F1
3) The MP4-12C already has an engine, so it doesn't need one from BMW.
