Revived Regal nameplate model will be a derivative of the Opel Insignia

This picture of the U.S.- spec Buick Regal has been posted by a user on Facebook who had the fortuitousness to spot the upcoming model on the street somewhere.

WCF has previously reported that the North-American-market Buick Regal will closely resemble the Chinese-market one - and both models are derivatives of the European Car of the Year Award-winning Opel Insignia. Although GM has, in the past, degraded the value of many of its models and brands through gratuitous badge engineering, this particular move seems like a smart choice given how the Insignia is a successful and critically well-received model.

The newly revived Regal will not only feature a similar body style to the Insignia but will share many of the same components too. Engines expected are a 2.0 liter turbocharged powerplant with 217 hp, as well as a 2.8 liter turbocharged V6 with 256 hp. The Regal may even come to borrow the 2.8 liter turbo V6 from the Insignia OPC/VXR which is dialed up to 325 hp in Europe.

The Buick Regal is slated for release in the North American market in 2010 as a 2011 model. It will be placed below the LaCrosse in the Buick model range.

The Insignia is a reat looking car and I see stacks them on the road in the UK. It's a shame in many ways that it's only being badged a Buick with the slightly negative implications that brand holds.

The German engineers made a great Opel in Rüsselsheim and the Americans copy this car for every market. How many names has this Opel? Germany: Opel Insignia UK: Vauxhall Insignia, South America: Chevrolet Vectra, China: Buick Regal and finally(?) U.S.A. also Buick Regal.

how does this work if Opel is being sold off and therefore no longer a GM brand?

The 2.8 turbo originally was sourced from Saab in the 1996 9-3 Aero, winning Ward Automotive's award as one of the "10 Best Engines." If you have driven an Aero with the 6 speed, it's a real blastmobile. The Opel Insignia also offers the manual. My concern is that Buick may go the "middle-aged man's car" route (hey, relax, I'm 58) and not make the manual available, which would be a shame for us Americans who like to shift for ourselves.
