Press days for the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show are less than seven days away and here we have a good set of Toyota FT-86 Concept pictures. These show more details than before, very much letting the cat out of the bag before its time.

A honeycomb grille dominates the front end while the side mirrors which are part carbon fibre feature turn signal lights. The rear end seems quite interesting. The lights cluster stretches from end to end, thinning out as it approaches the centre from either side. It's a clean cut design with no major frills apart from the air diffuser and the two single tailpipes hugging it.

Inside the future is brought to life by a flood of mostly bright red lights and digital readouts. If there were any doubts about the 6-speed manual transmission, they were put to rest by the three foot pedals. There's also something that looks like a red start/stop button at the centre console below the dashboard.

Toyota will introduce the FT-86 with more official information next week.

Wow, Toyota made a good looking car! Is this the new Supra successor or what? 370Z competitor?

Looking at engine's specs, this rather looks like an AE86 or Celica successor

that's what you'll get when you mix GT-R, the Mazda, new Ferrari, and a little bit of NIssan Z.

This is stunning, one of the best looking Japanese cars (including concepts) over the last decade. Finally something not boring came out from Toyota. Hope it gets into production soon.

Probably not until late 2010 or 2011, 2012 for the Subaru version, by then we will hear more about the Supra too.

I expected moer from Toyota. This concept look like it was a rush job. Could be a big disapointment when it gets reveal in person at the show.

...there was a 12 month wait for the Mini Cooper S, from the only dealer in the State, Ralph Schomp Mini, a few years ago.

I don't wait that long for cars... women, yes, but cars definitely NO!

If you waited 12 months for a Cooper S then all I can do is laugh.

@ Renegade – that’s very true…, well most of them anyway

@ Sideskraper – course not… then again I don’t have “phallic extension issues”! ;)

@ Cyclist – was in Denver back in 2004... love the Rocky mountains!

This car looks brilliant. I absolutely love it to pieces. Now it's time for Subaru and Toyota to discuss the chassis details and their drivetrain plans.

I would doubt that they will make people wait until 2011 to get one. This car is going to be going head to head with the Genesis Coupe as a way of fending off Hyundai's push into their Toyota/Lexus market, or even to push them off making it into the consumer conciousness.

Toybaru will have this car out extremely soon.

Can you say "G35 coupe." Looks just like it, give or take a few details.

Do I like it? Sure. It's okay. The problem is that since Toyota, and lately Subaru, are making ugly cars we get all excited about a design that could have come out 9 or 10 years ago. It looks like a revision to the Scion TC, the car that killed the longest-running Japanese import in history, the Toyota Celica. I owned a 1986 Celica GT, and can tell you it truly handled corners more smoothly than my 2002 Honda Civic EX Coupe. My point? This car is adequate, not a revelation, unless we want to accept that mediocre design is all the rage these days. The interior is total concept fun, the lights will likely be pared down to rational forms, and the Subaru version will likely look like some lame Impreza/Corolla POS. Just to be clear, I love Subaru and have owned 4 over the years, so I'm as pissed as you about the fugly new Outback. All I'm sayin is, in white a person could mistake this for the Honda CRZ from the front and an old TC from the rear qtr window. I just want more, not more flash, bling, or carbon fiber, just more timeless excellence. Can't I at least expect that from the makers of the rare, and hard-to-find Celica Alltrac GT4? Now THAT was a car to love. This? Well, let's just say no ones gonna' restore it as a classic in the year 2037.

I somewhat feel your pain. The ST205 gt-four was a beast with comparable performance to the supra. It pisses me off that the TRUE cars they had like the: Real AE86, MR-2, Celica GT-4, Supra and chaser tourer-v, had all been shelved for unloved econo-boxes and fugly Lexus hybrids. Fast cars, rally road\racing and hoodlum driving Is what made toyota in our hearts, and now they sell out to lazy old people. They shouldn't forget their roots and their fans. Stay in your mr effin lane!

It looks like a car for a 16yo, I would be embarrassed driving down the street in one. I'm sure for Toyota it's just a halo car to reel the younger generation in. But for Subaru, it's a classy step up from the WRX.

Now looking back and comparing the profile of this to the profile of the mule seen on the Ring, one can definitely see the comparison, and how they may have just pasted on an extended nose and tail to disguise it even better.

I think it's likely Toyota will offer the FT-86 with a dual-clutch transmission as an option, at least for the North American market. This allows for your choice of full automatic operation (VERY important for North American sales) or manual shifting with paddle shifters, where the shift speed between gears should be very fast (as we note from the Porsche PDK unit).

a 3.5v6 from toyota will run this car like a jet. plus a overhood scoop will make this car a real monster. not to mention a rear spoiler
