The new face of Volkswagen already seen in the Golf, the Polo and some commercial vehicles will soon find its way onto the Tiguan. Pictures of the facelift compact SUV have surfaced as it made its way around the Nurburgring and elsewhere. It seems no other panels have been affected by the surgeon's touch.

About four years ago the trend began going against massive SUVs towards smaller, luxurious urban off-roaders. So Volkswagen had to enter the segment as an antidote to the large Touareg. The Tiguan had made its public debut at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show and immediately drew controversy thanks to its name and exterior looks.

However as time went by the public grew used to both and some buyers began to appreciate some its features such as the self-parking system, rear view camera, panoramic sunroof, 4Motion AWD and interior utility talents.

Some engines in the range currently include a 110kW (150hp) 1.4 TSI, a 125kW (170hp) TSI and a 125kW (170hp) common rail TDI. Transmission options are a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic.

Expect to see the facelift Tiguan at an international motor show within the next few months.

From looking at the camouflaging, it may have a similar Grill to the Land rover LR3. But similar headlights to the Touareg.

Don't expect too much. There will probably be a Golf front end stuck on it.

I also hope this facelift is an improvement because I don't like the current face of Tiguan. Anyway, it cannot compete with the design of better looking SUVs like Ford Kuga, Mazda CX-7, Hyundai ix35 or Mitsubishi Outlander. IMO, overall Tiguan is above Toyota RAV4 and has better "off-road" abilities than Honda CRV. On the other hand, CRV is one of the best "on-road" SUVs (better driveability and stability).

I expect VW to show the Tiguan at either the Los Angeles Auto Show or NAIAS with the 140 bhp TDI engine as an option. Now THAT will really spur Tiguan sales here in the USA.

There is a 103kW TDI version too (at least here in Australia!)
