BMW aficionados know that once an M car goes into production that's it, there will not be any technical upgrades during its lifecycle. And since the current M3 was launched two years ago a new one is not expected until at least 2013. So then why is BMW testing an M3 around the Nurburgring in 2009? And why does the subject sport a very basic-looking rear wing, a front bumper splitter and what appears to be a roll cage?

A number of ideas are coming up regarding this, including one saying this is a CSL (Coupe Sport Lightweight). It will be remembered that a track-focused lightweight M3 CSL last went on sale with the E46 model. Among others it had a carbon fibre roof, an SMG II transmission, 90-degree fixed front seats and semi-slick tyres. But BMW says a CSL is not on the agenda for the E92.

Another possible culprit could be a road going version of the BMW M3 GT4 race car. Audi is availing units of the R8 GT3 to the public and BMW might be doing the same with its racer. The E46 M3 had a Competition Package which was also called the CS in the UK. But most of its makeup was taken from the CSL and so without it such a derivative seems unlikely. What do readers think?

I agree, it's probably some dude on a riced M3. What makes one assume this is factory testing?

What makes this a "riced" out M3? Do you even know what the term "rice" mean? I don't think so.

Yea, that's even worse than a riced M3... What's with the stupid wing?

@ 122 , rice is a cereal grass (Oryza sativa) that is cultivated extensively in warm climates for its edible grain. happy now ?

I think it might be a M3 CSL! Highly Likely

Look a bit like the M3 I had in Shift.

If that is a CSL, I can't wait!

The rims on this M3 looks like the rims on 1-Series xDrive Prototype.

indeed, the question is: is it a private tuned M3 or a factory-tested kit? If BMW is testing a streetlegal Race-M3 it will be interesting for sure, but I will believe the company that the CSL don't will get an successor.

if it really was some kind of prototype, bmw would have covered up their bmw emblems

They ask why is BMW testing a M3 at the ring? Not: why is a M3 being tested at the ring?

The GT4 theory would likely be the most plausible.

There's only two options IMO:

- as you said, and I immediately thought as soon as I saw the image; "a road going version of the BMW M3 GT4"

- or some guy with a riced out m3 as scratchy says...

that rear wing looks alot like the wing on the BMW M3 Staressenversion back in 03 it could be a GT version going road legal who knows.. but its not a CSL it might have the rims and all but the CSL never carries a big wing a really do hope it never does the CSL is perfect just how it is. or maybe there trying to touch toes with the GT3 ??? its showing a roll cage.. like i said who knows

the licenseplate shows that it is a factory owned car. a lot of certain letter combinations are reserved for bmw and that is one of those. also the cable at the front of me looks like a kind of sensor or something. the badge at the trunk should be the one from KW springs&dampers

It's probably just a guy that wants to modify his own m3...probably not factory-prepped

As my uncle is working pretty high at Motorsport GmBH I can say you are all wrong and there is no secret!

They are testing new powerplant for the upcoming M3 in year 2013, now they will test it and improve it thru those years before it's ready for production!

Ohh and unce said that it's V6 not inline-6 and it's got twin-scroll twin turbo! He told me that sound is pretty similar to that of a Nissan GT-R and it's fantastic!

So you hear it here first ;)

whats the big deal, all it is a M3 that has a front splitter and rear wing, does anyone not think that anyone can put that on their own car and just drive around the nurburgring? Its not special enough to be a CSL or a GTR

as I said, you can tell from the license plate that it is a company owned car, it is definitely NOT private owned!

The reason that this is not just an owner with a 'riced' m3 is because the car was spotted during the MANUFACTURER testing days at the ring...

It's a bmw licence and the car has a special antenna.
