Reader Spy: BMW 1-Series xDrive Prototype Caught?

BMW 1-Series xDrive Prototype?

A WCF reader has taken pictures of a BMW 1 Series Coupe in Munich. However, this is no ordinary 1er. According to our "spy" it features a carbon fibre roof and 19-inch wheels shod with 265/35 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. More interesting are the wide rear wheel arches which suggest an xDrive-equipped 1 Coupe could be undergoing testing. The 1 has not had AWD before so if it happens it would be a first.

What piqued our curiosity even more is the fact that these images were snapped on a road directly from BMW's M-GmbH. Munich has repeatedly stated that a 1 Series-based M car was out of the question. But two years ago a performance-bred 1 Series Coupe tii Concept car did the international motor show circuit. It featured carbon fibre materials and other lightweight construction substances.

The current ranger-topper is the RWD 135i Coupe with the BMW Performance Power Kit producing 240kW (326hp) and up to 450Nm of torque.

Is it based on the X1 xDrive drivetrain? This would be a fun alternative to the Evos and the Imprezas. Lovely rims by the way.

Firs 1-series is existed in between of deeply divided opinions about the looks and badge values ect. but a little RWD is no doubt a fine option if don't any need for a some land-yacht. It is a marvelous little car. Hopefully next will have roomier surroundings in back.

What do flared wheel arches have to do with x-drive?

Interesting the 19" wheels as BMW Performance division only sell 18"s max, and I've read - straight from their performance devision - that they do not advise anything larger than 18"s due to adverse performance and handling. So this is obviously tuned and unlikely to be final spec.

if you look at the brakes i would say this is more likely a mule for an upcoming supersport version or what ever it will be called. this version originaly was announced for the next gen 1 series coupe. why would you equip a mule with 19" rims with sports tires, super large brakes and a performance exhaust??

Let us hope for a tiny monster, the 3002 Ti/Turbo or M1

Those rims are M rims, from the CSL i believe they came on the M3 as an option for the club or w/e it was called. The brakes look like they are the M3 ones too. This should be a great little car when it comes out.

i agree with radmeister those rims are from the CSL and flared also look identical to those on the CSL , "it features a carbon fibre roof" this is pretty obvious ever since the CSL cam out with the carbon fiber roof they been it on there M cars exect the M5 of course. so is this a predecer to the M3 CSL?? or a sportier version of 135tii?? honestly i hope they bring the CSL back i dont want to wait another 30 year for another one to come out not only that but they only made 500 only sold in the UK if there gonna make this little mad bullet from hell make more than 500 and sell it worldwide to appreacite them at least! i like the 135 and the tii hope they make it. and X-drive not a bad idea but its a 2 door sports coupe do we need anymore traction then what it already brings???

Wide wheel arch, 19inch wheels like that and carbon fibre roof, you call that a xDrive Mule? I call it some sporty 1 Series mule

wait... i thought i heard that the next //M coupe would not be based on the Z-series but rather WOULD be based on the 1-series. It seems like a highly probable considering these pics too...

If this is a factory M version of the 1 Series then screw the Boxster...this is my attainable dreamcar of the moment!

But what makes it so sure that this is a factory works car? There must be many BMW tuner shops in Munich...

so if this is a bmw tuner then why covering the Bmw badge on the front ? and why the rims have the place of the M badge ?
