A new set of photos featuring the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS surfaced this week.  The photos show a car with less padding, giving us some insight into its design.

The prototype featured in the pictures appears to have a shorter trunk that smoothly integrates with the roofline.  Windows appear to be bigger, and side mirrors are squared off.  Headlights on the new model may be a bit more conventionally shaped, not quite rising as much towards the wheel-wells.

Taillights also take a new shape, stretching upwards instead of downwards.  LEDs also appear to be present.

Previously spied were the vehicle's rectangular tailpipes and the sunroof.  Both items are still seen in the new photos.

The new 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS should be launched sometime next year.  A BlueHybrid version of the "2+2" is expected, as well as petrol and diesel models ranging up to the 530+ horsepower AMG unit.

No-no, it is Porsche who was sleeping while designed Panamera.

I like a CLK with rear doors - whoops!

I'm kind of surprised and disappointed to see it is "literally" a modern interpretation of the previous CLS. I understand evolution vs revolution, but this segment is growing considerably and I'm concerned this won't be enough change to keep this model a leader.

By the looks of it, it has the S class platform, CL body (some parts of it over the whole body) and the new E class lights at the rear, hope the CLS 63 AMG has 19's with 20's optional, will need, it just hope this one is as good as the first CLS the whole car does look like it sits more stable compared to the current model

As with the first-gen CLS, it's a modified E-Class platform, a unique body, and the taillamps do not cross onto the trunk lid like the new E-Class. I like that it evolves the current, already modern look (and the old taillamps and trunk were probably the weakest part of the design, so maybe now the badges won't look like they're walking uphill), but those huge square mirrors are rather disturbing.

In my opinion Mercedes has almost always had ugly mirrors that don't compliment the rest of the car. One of my biggest disappointments.

i used to like the different sized side-mirrors on the w124s and w201s of the early 90s, very cool.

Looks like a CL in the front and a E in the back, actually very similar to the original.

We'll have to see, it's got a lot to live up to...

It seems quite squatter and more stable when viewed from the front (I actually love how it looks from the front so far)...from the back, I'm not sure I like those tail lights (like the current ones more). The door mirrors don't seem to complement the rest of the car though: they're squarish and everything else seems roundish.

However, overall, I think that designing a follow-up to the CLS was never an easy job, and so far it seems quite good :) We'll just have to wait for it to be uncovered before we can give any judgement...and preferrably it has to be viewed in the metal after it has had some time to mature, because most modern Merc designs look ugly at first in the photos but look much better a few days later, especially if seen in the metal.

i think it might be a grower like the last gen CLS. when it was first released i hated it, but after a year or two i thought it was the best model in Merc's lineup.

this version looks to be no different.

i agree completely. i hated it when i saw the pics of that bordeaux colored concept but months later started thinking it was one of the most appealing cars on the road.

Isn't it too big for a CLS?

It's bothering me that it somehow looks like the CC.

Come-on! It's like saying the Rolls Royce Ghost looks too much like the Geely GE.

I like that they will reduce the headlamp rising towards the wheel-ach. I was getting tired of every car-maker doing that.

I think it looks very nice already. Such a shame that mercedes never makes a manual car with a v6/v8
