Decision will likely come next year

According to a recent report, Volkswagen is seriously considering bringing the Golf R to the United States.

While in Germany, the scribes at Autoblog asked VW's American CEO, Stefan Jacoby, if the car would cross the Atlantic. He stated the proposal was being studied, but no decision has been made. A few hours later, Autoblog discussed the Golf R with U.S. product planner (for the Golf, GTI and New Beetle) Andres Valbuena. Thankfully, he's pushing VW to export the hot hatch to American consumers. More importantly, he wants the car to be offered in three- and five-door bodystyles with both manual and DSG transmissions.

While a final decision is likely a year away, Europeans will soon be able to enjoy a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine with 270 hp and 350 Nm of torque.

So you'll be able to have speed only on straight lines, yeah that's really fun !

Lol, totally agree with Max. This car is everything a Camaro is not and vice versa

Actually the new Camaro SS is incredible on the track. You should take a test drive before using some played out stereotype without any first-hand experience when you make your comments.

That would be a REALLY tough decision.

Max; Don't forget the Camaro is designed by a Chinese man in Australia, and built in Canada. It's not your typical "American" Muscle-car... Independent rear suspension does it's job well on a track...

The thing is if you put a little money into the R, you've got a sub-4.5-second car. And 2.0L, 270hp, stock, that some pretty legit German engineering.

I'd just have to have both.

I think that instead of this, VW should bring the Scirroco R stateside. It would give the differentiation between the GTI and the Scirroco that VW needs here.

I love the new dexign, it is a lot more pleasing to the eye that the than the MkV. But don't get me wrong I love Vw and have owned 5 GTI's. I would just rather see Stefan Jacoby plead for the Scirroco to come to the US. As much as I have been loyal to the GTI over the years the Scirroco would pull me away. Give me a Scirroco R in Green with the black leather.

I have a question.... Dose the new Golf/GTI/R share the same platform as the Scirocco? Or was it the Mk 5 platform that shares with the Scirocco?

yes they do. Scirocco shares the platform and GTI and R are both variations of GOLF.

now this car pissed me off. this should be called the GTI-R, and a proper R should have the 3.2 V6 powah!! :)

My advise to VW US CEO, Mr Stefan Jacoby, is not to ever forget to bring VW Golf in 5dr plus manual gearbox. I currently owned a '07 GTI - 5dr/MT, and I am patiently waiting for the new R so I can make the upgrade. I have many friends in the same situations.

For family people like us, this iteration adds utility plus the joy of manual.

Mr Jacoby should be rest assured that the Golf R with these features will sell like hot cakes.
