GM to close Saturn after Penske pulls out of deal

GM to close Saturn after Penske pulls out of deal
1982 Saturn

General Motors has announced that they will close Saturn after the Penske Automotive Group pulled out of negotiations for the brand.  Closing Saturn will result in the loss of 13,000 jobs, and could mean the shuttering of 350 dealerships.

The decision stunned employees and dealers who were unaware of any problems in the ongoing negotiations.

In a statement released yesterday, GM President and CEO Fritz Henderson said that Penske made the decision to end talks with GM not because of either GM, Saturn, or their retail network, but rather it was because of the inability to source new products beyond what it had asked GM to build on contract."

Although GM was going to produce three Saturn models for a transition period, Penske was unable to find a manufacturer to takeover.  In a recently released statement, Penske says they had an agreement with another automaker, but that company dropped out of the deal.

Penske refused to name the prospective manufacturer.  However, Renault Chief Operating Officer Patrick Pelata said today that his company was in talks with Penske, and the two sides were unable to come to terms.

There is also some speculation that members of the board for General Motors wanted Saturn closed instead of sold.  The concern was that a new owner would be able to turn Saturn into a competitive brand.

Still, the closure of the dealerships will cost General Motors dearly at a time when they have precious little available cash.  The company said they will provide Saturn dealers with cash to clear out their inventories and close their franchises by October 2010.

Owners of Saturn vehicles will still be able to have their vehicles serviced at GM dealerships once the dismantling is complete.

They should have kept Pontiac alive from the start. Bravo, politics...

Pontiac definitely should have stayed alive. They built the first Muscle car. As for Saturn this blows, In Penskes hands Saturn had an oppertunity to become something great...in the end idiots prevail.

Why doesn't Magna buy Saturn...since they have Opel...haha...or maybe Fiat...it might be a good way for the Chinese to get an outlet in the American Market tho...

No way in hell!!! Lets face it saturn sucked. It's so bad that they couldn't even give that brand away. Magna would go bankrupt trying to turn around a company with a worse image than Kia and Lada put together. Let it die, rest in peace. Also I hope the workers at those plants\dealerships find work soon. Getting downsized sucks...

Pontiac has just gone away for a while. Once the smoke clears and things get back going, down the road don't be surprised to see a resurgence of this brand as a sports brand again. The only thing to prevent it would be any contractual obligations or potential lawsuits. If those aren't present, I would think it would be possible to bring it back years ahead as a "retro" business move that capitalizes on the brand's performance history before the plastic cladding years. Fishes, Narco.

Why Pontiac was considered for the chopping block is anyone's guess ( especially when they were producing 9% of GM North America's total output - which is a noticeable chunk as a multi-billion dollar enterprise ). If it were my decision, Saturn would've got the chop and Pontiac will have stayed and have started showing the public teaser images of the 2010 ( or 2011, however much time Pontiac would need ) Pontiac Trans-Am; obviously being based on the Camaro but with some subtle yet noticeable changes like its forebears. As the world economy starts to pick itself up again and dust itself off and spit out its blood so it's ready to thrash the future challenges with a vengeance, hopefully ( as Narco said ) Pontiac will be re-born and the screaming chicken on the black bonnet will become a mighty phoenix.

too bad saturn's over too. as a marketing professional, its original project was always a great case for both the industry and retail segments. what gm has made of it, well, guess we all know by now. here's really hoping that some innovative, creative chinese, russian or indian company with lots of money a few brand issues go ahead and give that brand a future.

I might be mean but i really don't see the point of Saturn, they are only some reBadged Opels in USA, and that's it !! So .. GM, if you have some brains, keep the good brands like Chevy, Vette and others .. not some copy paste rebranded cars !

Yes, Saturns recently became re-badged Opels, so what! Opels are good cars and we don't get them here. I don't have much sadness for the passing of Pontiac other than for those who have lost jobs. There wasn't anything very unique there that couldn't be had at other GM divisions (or Toyota in the case of the Vibe/Matrix). At least Saturn was finally offering something "unique" compared to other divisions (Opels). I don't know what SilentKnight means by Pontiac contributing 9% of GM's total North American output. Is that 9% of all units built or a 9% contribution to "profit"? Either way, it doesn't sound like a strong enough number to keep them, but it is hard to say without data on the other divisions. I'm sure they did better than Hummer. A lot of Pontiacs ended up in rental fleets, which doesn't enhance resale or desirability. Keeping them because of the glory of the Trans Am or GTO doesn't make a lot of sense. At best, those are low-volume niche vehicles during times when brands need to position themselves as being environmentally responsible. In another ten years, a kid who was ten years old when the original GTO came out will be nearly 70. It's a dwindling market.

This sucks so bad I'm pissed. I work for Saturn at a local dealership where I live. Everyone at our store thought it as going great with the penske deal. Until a few days ago when the news broke. The manufracture that they did not decide ti mention above the one that backed out of the penske deal was nissan. What Im pissed about is after all these years of Saturn beeing around there line up is now the strongest its ever been. Compared to other GM products. Now i know GM has a wierd Fetish with duplicating the same model 5 different times. I know Saturns fall into that seniero with that but the quality, style, design, ect.

YAY bye bye saturn. Dont let the door hit you on the way out. These cars have always been at the bottom of the barrel with little effort into their design. Pontiac on the other hand really shouldn't have been removed from the new GM.

This is why GM is whack. Seriously, only four brands left? Pontiac was kick a$$, and saturn was pretty tight for once with the Ion imo, and now that saab is gone sucks as well. its not like anyone buys a GMC crap truck, hell, its just the same thing as a chevy truck except slapped with a GMC badge on the front.

Never was a big fan of Saturn vehicles, with the exception of the Sky (bad name though). It is one of the sleekest conv't in America.
