I hope for VW's sake that they put this on a major diet. Mechanically, this is a cousin to the Passat. The Passat VR6 4 Motion is more than 1,000 lbs lighter.

Pardon me, but that is wrong. The Touareg has almost nothing in common with the Passat, except the V6-engine and the VW-Badge. Just look at the engine's orientation: T-Reg longitudinal, Passat transversal. The T-Reg-platform is rather unique in the whole VW construction bin...and has to be, regarding its off road capabilities (and I'll vouch for them, especially). If any, the Tiguan is closely related to the Passat, since the Tiguan is built using the Golf-platform and the Passat using a modified and stretched Golf-platform.

That's correct, the Touareg bares no relation to any other VW model. Although it is corporate cousins with the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7.
