In an effort to build up hype for the L1 Concept, Volkswagen released a promotional video which appears to reveal a design mockup for the 2012 Golf VII.

Filmed at VW's Potsdam Design Center, the mysterious mockup appears 4 minutes and 37 seconds into the video. While we cannot be certain whether or not this is the Golf VII, the overall size and design seems to be correct. Regardless, the model features dramatic headlights, sleek styling, and a pronounced lower character line.

As we have previously reported, Volkswagen has recently begun road testing Golf VII prototypes. While the mules are wearing Golf VI bodies, it's obvious that the new model will be slightly longer and wider than today's Golf.

The Golf VII is expected to feature a seven-speed DSG gearbox, HCCI petrol engines (for reduced emissions) and an available Twin Drive plug-in hybrid powertrain. The latter combines a 1.5-liter diesel engine with three electric motors, which gives the Golf a range of up to 48km (30 miles) on electricity alone.

it's too similar to the current shape, and only the bumper is made of clay. ergo, i think it's another Mk 6 variant

The Golf VII is also expected to feature 2.0 TSI twin charged engine with well over 300bhp and 4-motion.

Would you guys expect anything else from VW when it comes to the Golf? The last 3 incarnations of it have been a steady evolution of the extremely average, designed not to offend, melted cheese design philosophy. Considering VW has set their target audience as "everybody", their design has to appeal to this audience, or at least be not too extreme and alienate potential clients. They seem to think hard lines are what people don't like and have developed a rather acute allergy to them...

I want more than anything else for VW to design a new, radical and striking car unlike any other hatchback out there. I own a golf, and can't help wishing it were a bit more radical

its possible: remember the jaguar xj? remember that the 2003 model was like a facelift of the one before it? and the 2009 one is as far removed from it as can be: its the best looking car in its class. I KNOW VW can do the same with the golf: jaguar als had a conservative target market but they changed it..

high hopes for this one.. come on VW.. ditch all the conservativeness and come up with a five-door coupe/hatch with a sloping, low roofline, a lower wider stance... and the beauty of the DB9, maserati quattroporte and the Alfa Romeo Brera..

come on VW... impress me

That looks almost the same as the current Golf, argh! Watch when the Golf 8 comes out a few years after the 7. All they will do is change the design of the Golf badge.

lol... i know VW can do it

they can ditch the conservative style of the car in favour of a more beautiful form (perhaps taking influences from th alfa romeo Mi.To).. and their target market will increase greatly as a result..

i know they can do it..

Why didnt they just add two more doors to the Scirocco, it would have been more beautiful than the current bland 6, hopefuly this is not the 7 cause we want something fresh (it all went down after 4, I wonder what happend)

If you want more daring design and sharper lines wouldnt you rather have a BMW 1er? A Golf is always going to be an everyman's car just like the Toyota Corolla.

Golf 7 will be as conservative as the 6 (5 was pretty cool so I bought one when it came out). Same as Audi. Some nice engines and great overall but styling is just too dumbed down and as others have said, trying to appeal to the widest demographic possible. Financially sensible? Sure. Will I buy another? Nope.
