VW Design Boss Losing Sleep over Golf VII Development

VW Group's design boss Walter de Silva has already had a remarkable career. He's been in the business for 37 years and has helped create such models as the Alfa Romeo 159, the Seat Altea and Leon, the current VW Polo, as well as the Audi A5 and A6 and designing Audi's signature single-frame grill.

But according to an interview de Silva gave to Automotive News, he's worried about his latest challenge.

"When I think about the Golf VII, I do not sleep at night," says de Silva.

De Silva will be tasked with keeping VW's next-generation Golf (the Mk VII), due sometime around 2012, as the iconic model it is. The VW Golf has been Europe's best-selling vehicle for most of the past three decades.

Designing the 7th generation Golf will be, as always, striking all the right balances new and old, functionality and flair. De Silva will likely take some cues from the latest VW Polo he helped design and he definitely seems to know what his objective is.

"The new Polo is a simple and honest shape -- and designing simplicity is much more difficult than overdesign with decoration," he says.

As head of VW Group design, de Silva is currently overseeing over 100 new model developments from each group brand, including Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Seat, Skoda, and VW. The Automotive News story ends with an amusing quote, to say the least, as de Silva talks about how hard he's been working at his job.

"In the past two years, I have spent more time with (VW group CEO) Dr. Winterkorn than with my wife."

We understand what he means but he may want to rephrase that.

He is not sleeping because he saw opel astra not because some thing he said.He is scary.I'm sorry but astra is good looking and good quality.Men go to sleep and dream about astra design and you may think about something like mk7 look like mk6 and so one...

In fact what Opel has done with the upcoming Astra is actually a clear copy-paste out of the 2005 SEAT Leon mkII's profile, another model that carries De Silva's signature, as an evolution of the design language shown in the 2001 Seat Salsa concept car, apparently long before the 2009 Astra came out in the surface. Thus no reason for De Silva to worry about! If the Opel Astra is good looking, this shall be due to De Silva's work...

You guys are right. This is really funny to see that Golf Mk7 comes however Golf Mk6 is still just a facelift of Mk5. By the way anybody knows who was the designer of the current Passat(2005) ?

Current Passat was designed by ex-VW Turkish designer Murat Gunak. His designs sucked big time anyway

Golf could take some design tips from Jaguar because the 2003 XJ was just like a facelift of the older model... and the 2009 XJ is all new and the best looking car in its segment

want to see that happen to the golf... a totally revolutionary design, the most bold, beautiful and striking hatchback in existence..

well... one can only dream

I thought it is the other way round since the Golf is pretty much just an evolution of its predecessors. Porsche designers gets the most sleep while Audi and Aston Martin comes second and third.

The 2012 VW Golf/Rabbit is expected to be a brand new generation -and not a mild facelift like it was the Golf VI- incorporating lots of technical novelties in the Golf range such as hybrid versions.

What is interesting though with the Golf VI is that under the classic (or even old-fashioned for others) design, it keeps leading in its class in terms of technical specs, like the independent rear suspension, the rigid chassis, the 5-star EuroNcap safety results, the TSI turbo-charged engines, the dual-clutch DSG gearbox etc etc. If only they could improve the reliabilty...

Jeez, the VI just came out. There is no need for a VII just yet. Chill out and get some sleep.

Why doesn’t he hold an inter-VW group competition for all the designers from all the VW group companies, (Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Seat, Skoda, and VW) plus a few external designers like Giugiaro to see who can design the best-looking Golf…?

…Or, just change the badges on the current one if it’s going to look the same – YAWN, oh excuse me – anyway!

For whatever it's worth, I agree with you on the open competition.

The problem is that when your chief designer has so many models to his name, he can hardly consult anybody else.

Maybe it's unfair to judge, but he's not really reinventing the wheel, the new Polo isn't exactly a huge leap forward.

Maybe he should leave the sleepless nights to his successors who will have to revive the Golf after its appeal diminishes, if ever...

Worst case scenario they design a new one the year after...

Wasn't hard to design the Polo. He just copied the Golf!

In 30 years or so, they've made 6 models...so by the time 2040 we gonna see GOLF 13....When they gonna stop?
