it looks like toyota has moved a bit backward in time while designing this. Looks rugged but already dated. I hate those protuding head and tail lights.

I agree with akbars600. I saw one yesterday on the road, it does look more rugged, just like what Toyota had wanted, but the design are dated, and yes, especially those protruding headlight and taillight. I think Toyota wanted to separate the non off-roaders to their car-based SUV/CUV like the Highlander and RAV4. The off-roaders will not care about the look in the new 4Runner. IMO.

This looks very dated already. And I mean properly dated, like it was launched in the early nineties.

Guess some of us are better off with Toyota's FJ Cruiser

One of the best drive-it-of-road SUVs, and has the rugged looks for that, looks good in black.

one piece of crab after another...Toyota and Honda proved that the position of Japanese and Korean, in terms of exterior and interior design, has been reversed. Toyota's design language is progressing towards Chinese style...

Well, I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one that feels that way about Toyota and to lesser extend Honda design. At least Honda are (for the time being) still quite pleasant to drive.
However, I wouldn't have expressed it as strongly as that! :)

Toyota sells cars not because of looks, but because of quality... you will never find another car that's as reliable and durable as a Toyota. This day in age quality is wat matters and capabilities... no other car can compare to a 4 runner or a landcruiser in capabilities, maybe the old range or freelander

You know I prefer the look of the third generation 4Runner. The last 2 generations have been pig ugly!
Toyota has made very little design progress over the last 10 years!
When MY money is concerned, I want a bit of looks too!

I must say I like how they've gone back in time somewhat in the design ques, for a more rugged look.
...But this thing is HUGE!!!

I like it, looks like the pre-gen 4Runnder which was my fave one. It looks off roadish and rugged, like an suv should.

I love truck platforms despite killer gas mileage and a chassis that prefers towing and diesel to regular driving.
But this new Toyota is designed really odd like the an FJ cruiser or overpriced Scion. It's abit comical.

WOW! What an ugly face! I wish they would get it right. Toyota are stuck in some warmed planet where they are adding corners... actual corners to their cars. This thing is awesome on and off-road (http://bit.ly/xrJ2A) but it looks like sh*t! IMO! I grew up with Toyotas, and we drove a '73 cruiser all over Australia... a great machine with lean, efficient design that would last... FOREVER! This thing looks old, odd, and wasteful. Will is sell? Sure, who doesn't need another piece of origami design in their driveway. EPIC FAIL!

its looks good it looks like the 87 4runner boxie strong! just wish the could make a little bit more like the 98-00 4runner

Toyota has done the right thing with this design. The very fact that its a properly sized SUV means that by definition it will never be aerodynamic so there's no point in bothering to style it with graceful curves. The target audience for this vehicle are people who think that they are rugged individuals. These people want functionality and proven designs. They WANT to be reminded of the bomb-proof Toyota 4Runner that their neighbor from 20 years ago tried to destroy but failed. If this truck works well off road (I'm guessing it does) it will appear to them as being a beautiful design.
Furthermore, with regard to the protruding head and taillights; I'm sure that Toyota will be more than happy to supply its customers with some protective bash guards...at additional charge of course.
And now that I've said positive things about a Japanese vehicle we should be on the lookout for 4 gentleman on horseback. They're due to arrive any minute now. Just between you and me I hear that the guy on the red horse is a real d*ckhead.

Well "EDavis" I have to agree. This Truck looks Beautiful, and it is a perfect design. I do think that the looks aren't for everyone at all, but the people who want a rugged off road machine will love it. That I'm sure of.

It's a good thing this model is reserved for the North American Market, along with the Lexus GX. The rest of the world gets the GX's poor twin, the Prado.
In the cyclical world of automotive empires the decline of Toyota has begun. 10 years from now Hyundai will be perched at the top where Toyota used to be, one American carmaker will be producing quality cars and the Chinese will be churning out credible cars. Under that kind of pressure Toyota will go back to the roots that made it what it is: solid quality, reliability and value.
September 26, 2009 11:32 am
i agree but let me tell you that the prado is an excellent car... not as luxurious but maybe even better... and yes i know they are the same car.

This day in age quality is wat matters and capabilities... no other car can compare to a 4 runner or a landcruiser in capabilities, maybe the old range or freelander. if you've ever visited a third world country or a desertic country or a mountainous country you'll notice that Toyota's are the most prominent cars on the streets
September 26, 2009 6:52 pm
Quality......hmmmmm......If u consider recalling 3.8 million cars sure. I find that Toyota recall cars more often than not the past decade considering they make the best "quality" cars. But hey maybe thats just me.

Isn't the point of offering a 4 cyl is to yield considerably better gas milage? So can someone explain to me why they did this to achieve only 1 MPG in the city over the V6?
