Following Monday's spy photos, Land Rover has confirmed the Range Rover LRX will join the line-up in 2011.
Set to debut next year, the production LRX will adopt the sporty styling pioneered by the aggressive LRX Concept. According to Land Rover design director, Gerry McGovern, "The new vehicle will be a natural extension to the Range Rover line-up, complementing the existing models and helping to define a new segment. It will be true to the concept and have many recognizable Range Rover design cues including the signature clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and the solid 'wheel-at-each-corner' stance."
While details are limited, Land Rover says the LRX will be "...the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced." To this end, engine options will likely include a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel (with 160 hp and 400 Nm of torque) and a 3.2-liter petrol inline six (with 230 hp and 317 Nm of torque). As previewed by the concept, a hybrid 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine may also be offered.
The crossover will be built at Land Rover's Halewood, UK facility and sold in over 100 countries.

The reason that LR is not in a leadership position is because it is too stodgy. Take a lesson from Jaguar LR or you will continue to be an obscure brand for an eccentric client base.

If they are going to fit a larger petrol engine -- which seems against the efficenicy mantra -- then I'd have guessed on the 3.0 V6 from the Jaguar XF.
I hiope they keep the looks and neat eatures of the concept. If they do this thing is going to be a runaway success.
