Rolls Royce Phantom Electric Vehicle Being Considered - report
2009 Rolls Royce Phantom Facelift

Luxury goes green?

In what is clearly a sign of the impending apocalypse, Rolls-Royce is reportedly considering a Phantom electric vehicle.

Auto Express is reporting that an unnamed Rolls-Royce spokesperson has revealed that the ultra-luxury automaker is toying around with the idea of producing a battery-powered Phantom. The source went on to say the heavy lithium-ion battery pack wouldn't be a big deal considering the Phantom weighs 2630 kg (5798 lb) with a V12 engine.

While details are non-existent, the Phantom EV could actually be a hybrid-electric vehicle like the Mercedes Vision S 500 plug-in hybrid. This would likely make more sense, because a pure electric Phantom would likely suffer from an extremely limited range.

To say the least, we're a tad skeptical. If Rolls-Royce wanted to go green, they'd likely outfit the Ghost with the powertrain from the BMW 7-Series ActiveHybrid.

I thought at first that I would have a problem with a hybrid Roller but actually it seems like a good match with RR brand qualities.

brilliant idea, but it needs a longer range and those batteries might put more weight on the three tonne phantom. i believe they have all the technology to do it.

This is one of the few cars that makes perfect sense as an EV. They aren't going hundreds of miles at a stretch, they value quiet and smoothness, lots of mass requires instant torque to get moving, etc.
