Land Rover's bold LRX Concept is inching closer to production, as our spies have caught a prototype undergoing testing at Germany's famous Nürburgring.

Wearing a Freelander 2 (LR2) body, the mule appears to have a shortened rear end and revised front fascia. While details are limited, the LRX will likely be powered by a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine (with 160hp and 400 Nm of torque) as well as a 3.2-liter petrol inline six (with 230 hp and 317 Nm of torque). As previewed by the concept, a hybrid 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine may also be offered.

Set to receive the prestigious Range Rover badge, the LRX is expected to be available in three-door and five-door variants. The production model will also be taller than the concept, to allow for added headroom.

The Range Rover LRX will be officially unveiled next year, with sales beginning in 2011.

I am waiting for this LR for quite long time, I hope it does not become boring like the Aston Martin Rapide. Please built it fast!

I hope it can match up with the currently famous Audi Q5, BMW X3, Benz GLK, or Volvo XC60...etc, and be better.........at least in off road ability!

Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, BMW X3 and Mercedes GLK? The Land Rover Freelander/LR2 rivals these. The LRX will be much smaller and will rival the forthciming Audi Q3, Mercedes "BLK" and the BMW X1.

Having seen pictures of the X1, Q3 and the supposed BLK, I'd say the LRX owns them on looks. We'll have to see if the rest of the world agrees with me

the LRX concept looks good , but the added headroom for the production model killed its looks.

OK I'm confused - these supposed spy photos of the LRX are clearly just a Freelander (LR2)....

If you look closer, the LR2/Freelander mule has been shortened from the b-pillar back :)
