Volkswagen Golf R & Scirocco R hit the Racetrack [video]

Das Auto R

Volkswagen has released a new video showing their Scirocco R and Golf R in action. The clip is pretty self explanatory, so watch it and enjoy.

As we have previously reported, the Scirocco R has a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 265 hp and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. Connected to six-speed manual transmission (or an optional dual-clutch DSG gearbox), the front-wheel drive hot hatch runs from 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds (6.4 seconds with DSG) before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

On the other hand, the Golf R uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine (with direction injection) that produces 270 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Despite the weight plenty of all-wheel drive, the car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds (5.5 seconds with DSG) before topping out at 250 km/h (155 mph).

The Scirocco R will start arriving at European dealerships this fall, while customers can pre-order the Golf R later this year.

Scirocco R is FWD only? That sucks, I was hoping it to be AWD like the Golf... Plain silly if you ask me...

I love the Scirocco, especially the ABD tuned car that they had for I belive it was the Essen Motor Show last year. I would love to see VW bring the Scirocco here to the states. I like the Golf as well since I have owned quite a few GTI's but I would take a Scirocco over a GTI any day of the week.

pointless product overlapping, in my opinion. a sporty, compact 3-door scirocco and a tall, short wheelbase, slightly mpv-like golf plus - that is all the market needs right now, and soon there will be space for nothing in between. i know it my sound weird to doom the ?ber mainstream golf as soon to be pointless, but... being mainstream is sooo nineties =] just call them both 'golf' and go for it.

by the way, that strategy is exactly what honda planned for the civic almost two decades ago, remember? it seems much more appropriate now that the 'lifestyle' issue is increasingly more relevant for the car buying audience.

I'm confused with VW's 4WD decision. Shouldn't the Scirocco be the faster of the two? Is there really a 5bhp power difference between the engines? And shouldn't the golf be more mainstream (as in, no 4WD)? I would just offer 4WD as a deletable option for both cars, but it is an option I would tick. On a Scirocco. Question is, with all this mayhem, which is cheaper? And quicker round a track?

Damn, my opinion exactly! The Scirocco should be the car with AWD and not the Golf. Seems it's the wrong way round, to me anyway. I love the looks of the Scirocco R but would no way part with lots of cash over the performance it offers (and it's using the older MK5 GTI engine - the TFSI, not the TSI, right?!!).

And even VWs are now getting LED DRLs. That's really sad. When every car has them, they'll just become another cliche accessory.

You know LED lights are going to be a requirement for ALL cars within a couple of years, right?

I LOVE these cars, but man what a lame video. I want to hear real engine sounds and footage on a real course- Serious drifting, wheel-lifting, tires clawing to retain grip and front wheels twitching to make course-adjustments. This looks like it was a German's rendition of a Camaro video. CHEESY.

The fastest Golf VI (GTI) was better than the fastest Scirocco III (2.0 TSI). And now the the same goes for the R version of these cars... What is the point of doing a sport coup? if the mainstream hatch is faster?

Really I think it's to ensure the Golf sells numbers. I mean, if both had the same power, which would you choose?! The way it stands now, if heavily into performance, you're forced into the Golf. The Scirocco looks way, way better and it's a shame it doesn't match up to the shopping trolley!
