MAZDA2 subcompact confirmed for U.S. and Canada in late 2010
Mazda2 Three-Door

The Mazda2, 2008 World Car of the Year, is headed for the United States and Canada. This piece of good news was sent out by Mazda North American Operations' president and CEO, Jim O'Sullivan during a presentation to the brand's top dealers. Such a move will coincide with Mazda's 40th anniversary in the US in 2010.

"You've asked us for it for a while now, and we've been studying the market to make sure we can make a business case for it across North America," O'Sullivan said. "As consumers' tastes and attitudes toward small vehicles have changed, we now believe strongly there is a place in our lineup for a car below our current least-expensive car, the Mazda3. Mazda2 will be true to everything that makes our cars stand apart from the competition: it will be stylish, fun-to-drive and a heck of a value. In short, it will be Zoom-Zoom."

Details of models to be sold and possible prices were not announced but will be out in due course. Currently only 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre petrol, as well as 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre turbo diesel engines are available depending on various markets. Japan calls it the Demio but it looks as though North America will stay with the name Mazda2. In the meantime potential buyers and other interested parties will be able to view the Mazda2 at the 2009 LA Auto Show.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Mazda North American Operations' president and CEO, Jim O'Sullivan, confirmed today during a meeting of the company's top dealers that the MAZDA2 subcompact, or B-Car classification, car will be sold in the U.S. beginning in late 2010. It was previously announced that the car also will be sold in Canada, beginning at about the same time.

"You've asked us for it for a while now, and we've been studying the market to make sure we can make a business case for it across North America," O'Sullivan told the assembled dealers.

No further details were released at the meeting, other than notice that the final North American-specification MAZDA2 will be unveiled to media and the public at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. Further information on specifications, content, pricing and on-sale timing will be provided closer to launch.

MAZDA2 has been a sales and media success in markets around the world, winning more than 50 awards and being named Car of the Year in more than 20 separate countries. Additionally, MAZDA2 was named the 2008 World Car of the Year, besting all other new cars around the world.

Celebrating its 40th Anniversary in the United States in 2010, Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif. and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario; and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

For whatever reason, I can't help but thinking the Mazda2 design as over rated. Yeah, it is cool and all, it's got a sexy, curvy profile, but... its front is kind of bland when compared to other Mazdas, and its overall concept is sporty, current and fresh, but nothing spectacular. Despite being a almost some sort of Mazda enthusiast (the 3 and the 6 are simply awesome), I do have to admit that the Fiesta is better looking in every angle, with more original lines and a better interior.

I have to say that as far as Japanese cars go, Mazda is on fire! The new 6 is okay, but I actually prefer the new 3, especially the five door version. This 2 would be a great addition to the American line up. The other cars in this class are such snoozers compared to this. I can only wonder what a Mazda 9 would be like, now that they are on the "zoom" kick!

I agree with you politz that it's a bit over rated....I've been to the dealership to look at that car in the flesh before...the interior is a step backward from the prev Mazda 2...too much hard coarse plastics everywhere........and the rear looks a bit too short.
