Mercedes has officially unveiled the 2010 E-Class Estate at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

While the exterior is predictable and familiar, Mercedes says the designers used long horizontal lines to emphasize the car's practicality and sportiness. Other design details include black B and C-pillars (which "disappear" into the privacy glass), attractive character lines, prominent wheel arches, and new LED taillights.

In terms of practicality, the E-Class features seating for up to seven, an "easy-pack" automatic tailgate, and a "quickfold" rear seat that can be lowered from the cargo compartment. Overall luggage capacity measures 1950 liters (68.9 cubic feet), which is nearly 266 liters (9.4 cubic feet) more than BMW's new 5-Series GT.

As we have previously reported, the E-Class Estate offers a wide variety of safety equipment including a 'direct control' suspension (with adaptive damping), nine airbags, and four belt tensioners. Additionally, Mercedes offers attention assist (a drowsiness detection system), Distronic Plus (advanced cruise control), Pre-Safe braking (automatic braking in emergencies), rear seat airbags, and self-adaptive belt force limiters.

At launch, the E-Class will be offered with three diesel and two petrol engines. Petrol models include the 215 kW (292 hp) E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY and the 285 kW (388 hp) E 500. On the diesel side, there is the 125 kW (170 hp) E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, the 150 kW (204 hp) E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, and the 170 kW (231 hp) E 350 CDI Blue-EFFICIENCY.

In early 2010, Mercedes will introduce the 100 kW (136 hp) E 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, 170 kW (231 hp) E 350 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY, 135 kW (183 hp) E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY, 150 kW (204 hp) E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY, and the 200 kW (272 hp) E 350 4MATIC.

Look for the all-new E-Class Estate to start arriving at European dealerships this November.
