Both failed BMW engines were new - team

Both BMW-Sauber drivers retired from qualifying at Monza with the same failures in their fresh V8 engines, the team revealed on Saturday.
First Nick Heidfeld and then Robert Kubica had to park their cars during the Q2 session, on the same day mechanics fitted new BMW engines for the high speed demands of the Autodromo Nazionale.
It is believed that while Heidfeld, who had been competitive this weekend, now has just one of his allocation of eight engines left, Kubica's failure means he has completely exhausted his supply of new power plants for 2009.
He will therefore have to tackle the remaining five races of the season with previously-used but still-functioning engines, or begin taking ten-place grid penalties.
"This is a very difficult situation for me, not only for this grand prix but also for the next races," said the Pole.
Team boss Mario Theissen said the two failures were the same but that a thorough inspection will only be possible back at the factory.
